CA: Should state haul big oil and auto giants to court?
Sacramento Bee ^ | October 1, 2006 | Stuart Leavenworth

Ten years ago, when Arnold Schwarzenegger was enhancing his movie career with "Jingle All the Way," his future environmental adviser Terry Tamminen was working as a pool-cleaning expert, water cop and would-be Bard of the Bay.

As Santa Monica Baykeeper, Tamminen spent his days tooling around in his boat harassing litterbugs. He also was promoting copies of his book, "The Ultimate Pool Maintenance Manual," while playing the role of Shakespeare in a children's play he wrote.

Over the objections of some Republican advisers, Schwarzenegger appointed Tamminen as secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency. Then he became the governor's cabinet secretary, and later, a special adviser, before he left the state payroll in August.

Now Tamminen is about to launch a new crusade, one that few would expect from a close adviser to a Hummer-driving governor. In a few weeks, bookstores will begin stocking copies of "Lives Per Gallon," a book by Tamminen that examines America's petroleum addiction and launches a blistering attack on the practices of the world's oil and automobile industries.

In the 250-page book, Tamminen argues these companies are perpetrating frauds similar to the tobacco industry by employing hired-gun experts and front groups to fight regulation and sidestep the health and environmental costs they impose on society. These two industries, he argues, are deserving of the same forceful litigation and taxation that has successfully reduced smoking rates in the past decade.

The timing of "Lives Per Gallon" could give the book a wide readership and make it an issue in the governor's campaign. Don't be surprised if Schwarzenegger's opponent, Treasurer Phil Angelides, starts waving "Lives Per Gallon" in the governor's face and pressuring him to endorse Proposition 87, a proposed severance tax on California oil production that Tamminen supports.

This article is almost 2000 words--it touches on the Lockyer nuisance lawsuit, alleging that tailpipe emissions are a "public nuisance" contributing to global warming. But mostly it is about Terry Tamminen, his efforts (along with Maria Shriver) in forming the new "green" agenda in Sacramento, and his upcoming new book and a war on big oil.

"OK, we will make you a deal and settle out of court. We agree not to sell any cars and trucks in California, and will make our customers in other states sign agreements not to take the cars we sell there to California.

"We hope you enjoy walking on foot.

"Have a nice day.

In addition, we will not sell any petro or natural gas products in California, or any motor vehicle parts.

Enjoy your day.

Do not allow any cars or trucks or gasoline or oil in California. Nor tractors or any other kind of vehicle that used any kind of fuel.

Have a good day!

Let's just let industry, transportation, and the manufacture of consumer products grind to a screeching halt, huh Terry? Because that's what will happen when you want more regulations, taxes, and litigation piled on top of already the 2nd most regulated, taxed, and litigated industry (energy) after healthcare. Then you can rename your commie book "Lives F'ing Lost Thanks To Us Envirowackos."

Judging by the numbers of California refugees and businesses moving into Idaho around me there soon will be no one but welfare recipients and illegal aliens left in that state.

Too bad. It is such a beautiful place but the dhimmiecrats and RINOs have ruined it as a place to live.

I think it's a GREAT idea!

Discourage BOTH the oil companies and car manufacturers from doing business in California!

Inanities like this make me think "Loser Pays" is the only way that lawsuits like this one should go to court.

The Auto companies should publicly tell AH-NOLD that the day he allows the suit to proceed is the day that they close all operations in the state. No Cars, no Trucks, no Dealerships, no Parts, no Factories, np Employees ---NOTHING!

Everything is moved out in 30 days to other states and nothing comes in.

Let him and the enviro nutties try to live like Havana Cuba.

Tamminen's unlikely rise began in 1991 when he persuaded the late Disney President Frank Wells to finance Santa Monica Baykeeper, part of a national network of environmental groups dedicated to protecting oceans and rivers. The network is headed by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a cousin of California First Lady Maria Shriver.

More on Terry here.

"CA: Should state haul big oil and auto giants to court?"

I prefer a different headline:

CA: Should any sane person still living there leave?

In other news, the rest of America joined in a class action suit against California for perpetually perpetrating fraudulent legalistic nonsense on the rest of us.

Tamminen has been a thorn in many sides of Californians since 2003, along with his buddy RFKjr. He used his position to blast Bush and join in with Gore and Clinton's Global Initiative. The guy that used to clean pools has been a useful tool for the envirowhackos.

There is quite a collection of articles at FR, as well.
