Operations in Iraq Yield Weapons, Suspected Terrorists

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Oct. 5, 2006 – U.S. soldiers confiscated illegal munitions in Baghdad Oct. 3, and Iraqi police and coalition forces apprehended three suspected insurgents and seized a sizable cache the same day in a combined operation south of Baqubah, military officials in Iraq reported.

Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers from 4th Brigade Combat Team, and 1st BCT, 4th Infantry Division, confiscated illegal munitions in Baghdad Oct 3.

While conducting combat operations at about 8 a.m. in Baghdad’s Al Bayaa district, soldiers from 4th BCT seized a rocket-propelled grenade launcher, two RPG rounds, two 57 mm rockets, 14 60 mm rounds, 10 81 mm rounds, a PKC assault rifle, a pistol, a mortar tube base, a full PKC bandoleer, and nine mortar fuses. The soldiers also detained three suspected terrorists.

In a separate incident, soldiers from 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, detained two suspects after finding illegal weapons inside their vehicle. The soldiers seized three AK-47s, seven homemade grenades and ammunition for a PKC assault rifle.

The five suspects from the two incidents were detained for questioning and explosive ordnance disposal teams destroyed the munitions.

In a separate incident Oct. 2, soldiers from 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st BCT, thwarted a possible kidnapping north of Baghdad after spotting a vehicle hidden in bushes with a male and female passenger.

The female passenger informed the soldiers that she had been kidnapped and the other passenger had plans to rape and kill her. The male passenger was detained and the female was returned to her home.

The soldiers also found an AK-47 rifle with seven magazines, a pistol with three magazines and body armor in the vehicle.

As of Oct. 2, Iraqi security forces and Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers have cleared about 95,000 buildings, 80 mosques and 60 muhallas, detained more than 125 terrorist suspects, seized more than 1,700 weapons, registered more than 750 weapons and found 35 weapons caches in support of Operation Together Forward. The combined forces have also removed more than 196,921 cubic meters of trash from the streets of Baghdad.

Elsewhere, Iraqi police and coalition forces apprehended three suspected insurgents and seized a sizable cache Oct. 3 in a combined operation south of Baqubah.

Iraqi police from Baqubah and soldiers with Alpha Company, 1-68th Combined Arms Battalion, 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, Task Force Lightning, discovered the individuals, along with a cache, while conducting a combined two-day operation searching area palm groves and the surrounding villages for illegal activity.

During the search, both elements came under small-arms fire from a house near the operation. The soldiers returned fire, killing one insurgent.

The cache consisted of one AK-47, five AK-47 magazines, two hand grenades, IED-making materials, anti-Iraqi propaganda, and binoculars. The three detainees were taken to a secure location for questioning, and the cache was destroyed in a controlled environment.
