Winter apologizes for '04 e-mail to writer

Congressional candidate Bill Winter apologized Monday for a 2004 e-mail that a media critic interpreted as an implied physical threat.

Winter, a Democrat challenging Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Littleton, said he never intended to threaten anybody. Still, he said he was sorry for the tone of a September 2004 e-mail exchange with Dave Kopel, a Rocky Mountain News media columnist and research director at the Independence Institute.

Winter is a military veteran, and during the 2004 presidential contest he defended Democratic candidate John Kerry from charges that he had lied about his military record in Vietnam.

Winter e-mailed Kopel denouncing the "Swift Boat hysteria" surrounding Kerry. Winter said that while President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney supported the Vietnam War, they did not serve in combat.

Kopel defended his writing about Kerry's war record, which drew an angry response from Winter, who called Kopel a "rabid attack dog for Bush and Cheney" and ended with the line: "When the revolution comes, I'll be looking for you, brother!"

In an interview Monday, Kopel said he interpreted the "revolution" line as an implied threat, so he placed the e-mail in a file that he said prosecutors might find should anything ever happen to him.

"The clear implication was that when the revolution comes, and when he finds me, he's not going to shake my hand," Kopel said.

Contacted Monday, Winter said, "I look at that, and I don't know what was on my mind at that point. I know both sides were worked up. . . . I can guarantee you it wasn't a threat. I'm not a person who goes threatening people.

"If he took it that way, I certainly apologize. And, quite frankly, I apologize for getting worked up and not being able to have a better dialogue."

Kopel said he accepted Winter's explanation.

"I'll take him at his word for what he says about it now," Kopel said. "If he sincerely has no recollection for what he meant, I don't think there's anything more to do. He apologized, and I think that was the mature thing to do."

Winter has recently criticized Tancredo for his fiery rhetoric, including Tancredo's suggestion last year that the U.S. could threaten to bomb the Muslim holy site of Mecca in retaliation for terrorist attacks.

About his own e-mail, Winter said, "We ask if it's the sort of thing that a serious political candidate would say, but nobody seems to question the things Tom Tancredo says."

What would the liberal media's response be if a republican had done this?

Are you kidding? If this were a Republican candidate, it'd be all over CNN and the other socialist networks. We all know that.

It'd be on 24/7 until the candidate were driven from the race. The double standard abounds.

A conservative would never say "When the revolution comes ..." That is Communist lingo. That is what the voters ought to pay attention to, not the threat.

When the revolution comes, Winter will be begging for his life from Islamonazis saying, "I was on your side all along," before they kill him.

The establishment media would no doubt not be so lenient on a Republican or a conservative. However, in the EM's defense, Republicans in general, and conservatives in particular, tend to actually mean what they say. Left-wingers have a tendency to say what is politically expedient. They generally only say what they really mean when they think they are among themselves.

If and when that revolution should come look for people like Winter to be cowering in a hole somewhere.

***"We ask if it's the sort of thing that a serious political candidate would say, but nobody seems to question the things Tom Tancredo says."***

What Tancredo said about bombing the terrorists is pro-America. What Winter said about the revolution is ANTI-America.

"When the revolution comes..." leftist can't wait to murder their opponents. That's how they create such blood baths when they take over. America was fortunate that it's revolutionaries were not leftists.

Exactly - Is anyone asking him "WHAT revolution?"

He should be made to answer that.

Of course, WE know what revolution - the one they been planning for decades - coming out of the closet as the socialists they are -

They realized, about 30 years ago, that they were not going to be strong enough to come out under the Socialist label, so they systematically - with great deliberateness and planning - infiltrated and took over the democratic party. (This was under the DSCO - Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee - which has now merged with the Socialist Party of American.

http://www.dsausa.org/dsa.html

With the only 'old' democrats: Zel, etc - and now JOe L. out of the picture - they have succeeded.

They are now ready and poised to rule as socialists. They are members of the U. S. Socialist Party - where the he*l are real reporters who can bring this out?

We are on the very brink of a Socialist takeover - and yet, we have puffed-up republican voters who, high atop their soapboxes, intend to 'teach Bush and the republicans a lesson" by letting - helping - these Socialists grab power. They naively think we can then regain power in two years.

Got news for you - if they gain power this Nov....that's it. First thing, they have ready their plans to do away with the Electoral College - which is gets rid of the red state votes.

They WILL install Socialism. You can take that to he bank. and it will quickly dissolve into the hardest line - Communism.

It took 80 years of misery, subjugation, poverty, famine, death of millions, for Communism's back to be broken after the Bolshevik Revolution.

You want your children and grandchildren and great grandchildren to live that? Actually, they will take over every aspect of our lives so swiftly, YOU will live it too. Read history.

So far, it's been a gradual building up of control - if they get voted in, the scale will be tipped rapidly - and any of you who helped them get power - are equally culpable

The caption on a pix of Winter that appears with the story:

Bill Winter says he can't recall what he meant in his 2004 e-mail to Kopel.

I think his meaning is fairly obvious, but even if it weren't it's a safe bet he wasn't planning to look for Kopel so they could go windsurfing.

Kopel is something of a glutton for attention, I suspect he's trying to get his name in the news again.

They are members of the same party and are themselves undercover. Communists must lie to gain power. Once they do they keep it, as you say.
