BAGHDAD (AFP) - The Iraqi government has showed first-ever video images of Al-Qaeda's leader in Iraq, Abu Ayyub al-Masri, and said his capture was imminent.
"I can say we are very close to Abu Ayyub al-Masri and we say to him your days are numbered," said Iraqi National Security Advisor Muwaffaq al-Rubaie Sunday.
The insurgent training video, screened at a media conference broadcast live on state television, showed the bespectacled successor of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi describing how to make a bomb.
Rubaie cited Iraqi security operations around the country for his optimism the Al-Qaeda chief will imminently be snared.
He singled out the tribes of western province of Anbar for their efforts against Al-Qaeda.

I worked at Balad last year, which is where the operators are based, including Task Force XXX (Task Force de jour). You'd spot them from time to time at the PX or chow hall. Unconventional guys with unconventional weapons.

Sorry, I can't recall which blog it was, but it was a recent posting.
Baghdad is a skittish place as a rule these days. But they're not acting any different today than usual. The Iraqis are pretty laid-back, cheerful people considering what they have to live with. I guess they're kind of resigned to it all for now.

What do you think are the actual chances that the jihadis could get even one (let alone "multiple") car bombs inside the perimeter of the IZ as al-Masri is hoping to do?
At Balad - because of the constant ongoing construction - we were always a little concerned about the gravel trucks more than anything else, certainly the KBR fleets were OK. The troops were pretty careful with gate inspections.
But little Toyota VBIEDs wouldn't have had a chance of actually getting inside the wire. Zero.

If they're only beating them into pulps, then that's an improvment. A Kurdish guy who was our translator for the Pesh once commented to me, "You Americans don't understand Sunnis. You're too nice. When we see a snake, well, we know how to deal with snakes." As he ended his comment, he made a motion towards a rock like he was going to stomp it.
Without American supervision, that place will be back to the old school rules in no time.
