There is no global "free trade" as this article correctly documents and all we read in the comments of this thread are the denials of the facts.

There is none so blind as he who will not see.

America is losing a rigged game.

A nation that manufactures nothing IS nothing.

How can you even defend your nation if all your weapons are imported to you by potential enemies?

Because most people in here are party hacks and refuse to open there eyes or think for themselves. So we keep hearing things like the trade deficit is amazing for America and Bush's head should be plastered on Mount Rushmore.

America is losing a rigged game.

I'm looking at our GDP and low bond yields. I don't see how we're losing.

screw free trade! how about just one time....fair trade!

free trade such as nafta/cafta/all first trade partners with the US have been nothing but shams....each time the agreements although good in design have worked adversely against the US!

And when the US protests at the most "impartial fair & balanced" body at the hague...it always loses to the eu or some 3rd world nation....

Free trade should be just that free trade...but it also must be fair trade!!!!

Manufacturing is not the only way to "add value". In fact, manufacturing, as a way to add value, has, is, and will continue to diminish.

"a nation that manufactures nothing IS nothing"

Well said. It would make a fine tagline, too.

Without manufacturing, how will we be any different than China 30 years ago???

How will we be any different than Egypt or Lebanan???

Ofcourse the gov't will manufacture the 'numbers' to appease us...There are economists out there that are 180 degrees from the gov't paid numbers crunchers...

That's a great point.

We'll only make $3 trillion worth of stuff this year. Who makes more? Should we worry when we produce $4 trillion? Will the warning sign of our demise be $5 trillion? When are we doomed again?

America is actually manufacturing more than ever, so America might be something after all.
