Texas Landowners Protest Superhighway Plan

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Protestors turned out across the state Saturday to voice their concerns about the multi-billion dollar Trans-Texas corridor.

The 4,000-mile highway is being developed, in part, to relieve traffic on Interstate 35.

The corridor would be three times wider than the average highway, wide enough for cars, trucks and trains. It would also be used as a route for utility lines.

However, not everyone supports the plan for a highway that would run from Mexico to Oklahoma, because in order to make this ambitious project a reality the state will have to take land through eminent domain.

“Many people realize this is a rip off of Texas citizens and we're doing our best to stop it,” said Russ Russell of Grapevine.

Protestors say people shouldn't have to give up land that has been in their families for generations.

“The people are entitled to their land and their homes,” Arlington resident Jerry Pikulinski said.

But it’s not just the land that's an issue, said Tarrant county resident Beth Kisor.

“I am very disturbed about roads being taken after they've been paid for by taxes and become toll roads.”

Still North Texas transportation leaders support the project saying if the infrastructure isn't improved, the Texas economy will decline.

After all, Customs is only administrative and we could give the Mexicans copies of everything. Or, why can't the Mexicans check out this cargo when it enters Mexico.

They could and that's how it done today. But if it expedites, reduces shipping cost and improves efficiencies of US shipments across the border why hold them up at the border?... After all, the Custom facility is only administrative as you say.....

"I think George Bush is a One Worlder and I think he wants to get rid of the Borders of the U.S.A."

Gee, ya think? That's been his agenda since day one and before that it was Clinton and before him was Daddy Bush.

You do realize that, by pointing out the obvious, your loyalty to the United States of America is called into question. Are you now or have you ever been a globalist? Have you ever consumed a Mexican beer or eaten a taco?

The new "underground railroad"? You can add Oklahoma to "Aztlan" if this plan goes through.

Like they can't use I-35, I-19, I-5, U.S. 95, and so on at this point in time?

Conversely, would not building the superhighway solve our illegal immigration problem? If one looks at the argument in this fashion, then one should realize how badly that concern is misapplied.

I never hear anyone mention what will happen when all the trucks, trains and goods are dumped into Oklahoma. I guess that is Oklahoma's problem?

I consumed Cerveza Pacifico in La Paz, Mexico, in 1991. Damn my hide; I should be hung for treason!

Modelo Especial and fajitas?!? You b@st@rd! It's straight to the firing squad for you! A hanging of someone as loathesome as you would be a waste of good rope! :-)

Whoop de doo! First Mexico to Oklahoma, then Canada! Can we all say North American Union? Like it or not, here it comes.

I remain fascinated by this argument. A political union of North America is inevitable because a highway connects the three countries involved? Is it the physical attributes of the highway, the metaphysical idea of what it represents, or some combination of both, that makes it so terrifying?

I think everyone missed the title of this thread, "Texas landowners protest superhighway plan".

That means Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas or Canada, don't have a damn thing to do with this thread. This is about a plan being shoved down the throat of TEXANS! We in Texas have been getting screwed over by our politicians with one 'you front the bill on this project' after another. The Texas lotto will pay for education. NOT! The new business and cigarette taxes will pay for education and lower your property tax. NOT! This new 'Superhighway' will ease congestion on state roads. BS! It will only bring suffering to many families and open the door for the masses to furtherly invaded an already water-starved state.

Don't get me wrong, I love Mexican food but, that's not our concern on this thread.

Sorry, but this highway issue is much bigger than Texas.

Man, thank goodness for a couple of level-headed posters. More and better highways means more social and economic mobility, a better competative edge, more effective capitalism, etc., etc., etc.

It is Gary but, this thread was about the concerns of Texans. Texas use to be it's own country, We've dealt with this sort of thing before. Since I'm a Texan, I'm going to do it on a state level first.

Your comment brings up almost every point that needs to be debated. Unfortunately, any legitimate discussion of your concerns will be lost in the static of hysterical observations about the NAU, illegal immigration, etc.
