All we need is to get Jordan, Syria and Iran to do the same thing and then we can clean up that mess.

Let me get this straight.

The Saudis are going to put a fence on their border to keep people out.

Why, it's just nutty enough to work.

But where will they get people to pick lettuce and pound nails for them?

Contrast this to our 700-mile wall, along with Mexico's reaction to ours:

The government of Mexico on Thursday issued a statement expressing "its profound concern" with the fence. The statement, translated from Spanish, said such measures "are contrary to the spirit of cooperation that should prevail to guarantee security in the common border."

Just a bumper sticker solution to a complex problem. According to Ted Kennedy.

Has this whole world gone topsy-turvy? The Saudis get it. Why can't we?

Guess Saudi is afraid the Sunni who've been leaving for Iraq for centuries to do the dirty work for the Turks and Brits might be trying to come back home soon.

Iraq should build a fence around it's entire border. U.S. Troops and Terrorists go in...only U.S. Troops come out.

Love it. Think I will have one in size 25. Just perfect for here in San Diego where on our southern border is Mexico.

The dimbulb writing this article has it completely backwards. The Saudis are building the fence at our request! The Iraqis and the Americans have been demanding for a couple of years now that the Saudis control the flow of insurgents into Iraq from the Kingdom. And now that they are doing it all they get is grief. Sheesh!

...ultraviolet night-vision cameras...

I'm not an expert with the sensing equipment used in this sort of fencing, but "ultraviolet night-vision cameras" sound screwy.

There are a couple types of night vision systems I'm familiar with, but none that could be correctly described as "ultraviolet night-vision cameras".

I wish I'd had a chance to put in a bid on this. Perhaps I could have convinced them that they needed neutron imaging camera systems.

Lemme see 20 cameras to a mile for 700 miles... that's 14,000 cameras... with a markup of 20%... that about $250 million in pure profit...

Yep, I could retire.

The proper comparison isn't the US-Mexico border.

This is the Saudi Maginot line.

Well, shucks. I thought fences didn't work. The media slime here in the U.S. assure us that a fence won't do diddly if built on the Southern border. They also assure us that it won't work for Israel; I guess the past several years of vastly reduced raghead incursions is just a blip.

Walls work pretty well, so long as the gate guards can't be bribed. At the least, prices of bribing the gate guards will go up.

Contractors competing for the project will have to promise that they can complete the whole 550 miles of fence within a year.

I hope we have a similar requirement for ours and that the project doesn't die after the November election.
