A 16-year-old student at Platte Canyon High School in Bailey, Colo., is dead today not because America has too few gun-control laws, but because it has too many. The school was one of thousands in this country that had declared itself gun free. Consequently, when Duane Morrison went on his kidnap, sexual-assault and murder spree Wednesday, school officials were powerless to intervene, and police were too late to save Emily Keys.
Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said America must take "all necessary steps to make our schools safer for our children."
Supposedly, it did that by declaring them gun free and increasing penalties for anyone found on school property with "a weapon," real or otherwise. Mr. Helmke now wants even more worthless gun laws that the Duane Morrisons of this world can ignore wantonly and that would leave millions of children even more vulnerable to school invasions.
In October 1997, an assistant principal at the high school in Pearl, Miss., retrieved a gun from his car, cornered a shooter who had killed two students and held him until police finally arrived. In April 1998, a teacher was shot and killed in a school invasion in Edinboro, Pa., but further tragedy was averted when an armed man who happened to be at the school disarmed the shooter as he attempted to reload and held him for 11 minutes until police arrived. No one will ever know how many lives were saved simply because the hero was packing.
Criminologists say more than 2 million crimes are foiled every year by guns used in self-defense. Guns are used to fend off criminals five times as often as they are used by criminals. Just the possibility that a gun may be present is an effective deterrent.
The tragedy at Platte Canyon is another reminder of the madness of gun control. By disarming principals, teachers and other law-abiding people, Congress and state legislatures have made schools easy targets for madmen to carry out their mayhem without fear of encountering someone who might shoot back. If America wants to prevent a recurrence of Platte Canyon, it should give its principals guns and train them how to use them.
Ping to a Republican-American Editorial.
If you want on or off of this ping list, let me know.
There was an old Doonesbury strip where the Duke was being interviewed by a Senator. Duke advocated gun ownership by saying something like "Let's say your wife goes nutty and starts shooting you. Wouldn't you want to be in a position to return fire?"
What? Why that's unthinkable.
Stop thinking it.
I'm not sure I would include "law enforcement" in that group. My son is a cop, one of about 60 in his town and he tells me that he doesn't know any cops who are against armed law abiding citizens.
It can't be though because we live in Illinois.
Why is it unthinkable?
The idea has gotten rebuffed, but in light of the recent shooting here in Wisconsin, maybe it will get taken seriously.
The left simply doesn't get it. Time for major change in this country.
I have a CC permit here in VA, and the ony 3 places I cannot carry are places that serve alcohol, courthouses, and schools. And the big difference where schools are concerned? Carrying there is a FELONY.
The whole gun issue sums up the differences between liberals and conservatives.
The liberal mind set is to distrust the individual and have a government of coercion. If 20 laws dont change what is happening 30 or 40 will. The liberals also believe that everyone is just like them - if they decide that they can exploit something for their advantage then everyone else will do the same and that must be prevented!
Conservatives, on the other hand, seem to realize that laws dont promote a civilized society; training in social skills both at home and in society does. Lawbreakers are exactly that and they should be punished. If a person breaks existing laws, new laws will not turn him around. Conservatives know that everyone isnt like them and, more importantly, most seem to enjoy this. As for exploiting laws and events for gain, most conservatives seem to be too busy with life to do such a petty thing.
This would be a start.

You should be able to carry anywhere, with the exception of someone elses private property where the owner of the property tells you not to.
If you don't want me to carry a gun in your home, I have two choices. Disarm before entering or don't go in your home.
All that having been said, I live in Illinois. One of only two states in the entire country that doesn't have some form of concealed carry law.
Because you're not supposed to think it. Do we have to send over some agents to assist you?
Agreeing wholeheartedly, but not folowing your meaning on this sentence... The liberals also believe that everyone is just like them - if they decide that they can exploit something for their advantage then everyone else will do the same and that must be prevented!
