Kunte Kinte, Alex Haley, and Leonard Blackshear - three lives that have forever changed the face of Annapolis.
Last night, more than a hundred people joined the bronze children around the statue of Alex Haley as if they were listening to stories from the book that forever lay open in his lap during the annual commemoration of the arrival of Kunte Kinte in America in 1767.

"Would we be here today if Alex Haley and Leonard Blackshear had not decided to explore their rich heritage?" asked Anne Jenkins, a poet and long-time Annapolis resident.

"History is a powerful source and a shining light," he said. "These men are a symbol of the triumph of the human spirit."
The ceremony also kicked off the 19th annual Kunte Kinte Heritage Festival.

I live six miles from Alex Haley's boyhood home. I doubt that even he would agree with this.

I don't know about the first part, but I do know that the last part is true. Where the grandfather owned the lumber yard. They lived in a very nice house for the time and to be just off the Jefferson Davis Highway and Nathan Bedford Forrest home did very well for Southern Blacks.
'"Kunta Kinte, a slave immortalized in "Roots," the famous novel by his Pulitzer prize-winning ancestor, Alex Haley."'
This columnist claims that Alex Haley is the 'ancestor' of Kunta Kinte. Actually Alex is his alleged descendant.
Yes: This is a statue to plagiarism.
When many (most) of Haley's "family facts" were publicly debunked "Roots" became an historical novel.
When it was found later that large parts of it were plagerized from a novel called "The African" and Haley was sued and had to publicly admit his guilt and pay a lerge settlement, well, there went the ballgame.
Annapolis ... don't they have a Naval Academy there?? ;-}
His "rich heritage". Isn't every line of a "rich heritage"
My ancestor, Frederick Getman, came over in ...1704 or so, from the Palatine area of Germany. The English queen hired them to collect turpentine, but the trees were the wrong kind of pine for what they needed/wanted.
The Getmans settled here, fought in wars, lived and died and some still live up in the same Genessee Valley area where the family first settled. I met a relative once, 10 years ago, in Memphis. Called him up and told him my dad was a Getman, turned out we were descended from the same son of Frederick as he was and you know what? He looked SO MUCH like my dad and one brother.
Too bad we aren't from Africa, or my family history would be considered rich too. Darn!

"I just read an article in the Village Voice (23 feb 93) that blows the cover off Alex Haley's search for his roots.
Apparently much of his 'documentation' was fabricated or misinterpreted (this is really being too kind to him); he lifted wholesale passages from other african and african-american novels and accounts and was in and out of court for plagerism; the book was so heavily 'edited' by two other writers that it is questionable at best to call him the author; african-american historians have long questioned its authenticity; and the publishers at doubleday knew all of this when they decided to market the book as non-fiction. according to the Voice, the opening of haley's papers at UT Knoxville in february would substantiate many of these longstanding charges of fraud."
Did Alex go on a spree and get a bunch of wimmin pregnant?
I think some imbecile once asked Colin Powell if he had ever researched his "roots". He replied that he was from NYC, and that his parents were from Jamaica.
Then the imbecile asked if his parents had been slaves.

I wonder if the'll start at Annapolis High School and discuss Latino-Black relations?
Not sexy enough or renumerative enough. High school punks slugging it out in the hallways does not translate into money.
Loki's laughing.
...and not a word about Chicken George. He must be rolling over in his grave right now.
LOL! When I first scanned the title I thought to myself who is Knute Kinte and what naval ship did he command?
