Webb Denies Ever Using Word as Epithet (terrorized blacks)
Washington Post ^ | September 28, 2006 | Michael D. Shear

Posted on 09/27/2006 10:32:04 PM PDT by CharlesWayneCT

Democratic Senate candidate James Webb on Wednesday sought to explain remarks he had made a day earlier, in which he refused to say whether he had used the "N-word," but he insisted he has never used it as a racial epithet aimed at anyone.

(snip)

Webb's comments to the Times-Dispatch prompted Allen campaign officials to direct a reporter to Dan Cragg, a former acquaintance of Webb's, who said Webb used the word while describing his own behavior during his freshman year at the University of Southern California in the early 1960s.

(snip)

Cragg, 67, who lives in Fairfax County, said on Wednesday that Webb described taking drives through the black neighborhood of Watts, where he and members of his ROTC unit used racial epithets and pointed fake guns at blacks to scare them.

"They would hop into their cars, and would go down to Watts with these buddies of his," Cragg said Webb told him. "They would take the rifles down there. They would call then [epithets], point the rifles at them, pull the triggers and then drive off laughing. One night, some guys caught them and beat . . . them. And that was the end of that."

Cragg said Webb told him the Watts story during a 1983 interview for a Vietnam veterans magazine.

(snip)

Webb, who is in Texas for fundraising events, did not respond to repeated requests for comment. Todd said Webb denied the allegations in a conversation with her.

He said it's not true. It's not even close to being true," Todd said. She quoted Webb as saying: "In 1963, you couldn't go to Watts and do that kind of thing. You'd get killed. So of course I didn't do it. I would never do that. I would never want to do that."

This is probably just the beginning. The Virginia Senate Race has been ugly, driven by the DailyKos, MoveOn, DU folks, and their local counterpart RaisingKaine.

They called Allen a racist. They said his son was named after the founder of the KKK (imagine having to go to school after THAT gets circulated about you). They said his grandfather was a Nazi collaborator who was arrested by the allies. They said his mother was a racist that taught him to swear in foreign languages as a child.

They said he was anti-semitic, and was ashamed of his heritage. They said his supporters "booed a jew" at a debate.

Good people know that what you said 30 years ago doesn't define a man. Republicans are pretty good about that, and pretty fair about treating people fair. But good republicans won't sit around and protect Webb after seeing what Webb has done to Allen.

As someone who has admired and respected Webb for 25 years, it was painful for me to see him switch parties and run as a Democrat. Now I have just become plain disgusted by the gutter tactics his campaign is employing against Allen. Webb is a deep woods redneck and it would astound me to learn that he has not uttered the same racial slurs, taunts and jokes his minions are trying to pin on Allen.

You know, I'm tired of someone uttering one single word and wrecking their career when you can flip on about 5 radio stations in any city and hear that same word, probably multiple times in a single "song."

Now watch.. some of Webb's former ROTC mates will come forward to verify this account, and the media/Webb campaign will suddenly declare all of this "irrelevant" and say it is "time to move on", then unleash some new smear on Allen.

Is Watts a community in Fairfax County, Va.?

Webb went to school at USC in California. I think he was a freshman in 1963.

The Watts riots were in 1965, so it could well be that in 1963 there was still a lot of this race-harrassment going on.

And I'm not sure blacks would kill anybody who did this, especially in 1963. In the Watts riots, they beat up a lot of people, but only killed a few people despite 10s of thousands taking part.

Colmes was trying to smear Allen with this lie tonight on Hannity & Colmes, calling it a "pattern of behavior". I wish Hannity would grow a pair and slap that commie down.

Sounds like they were performing Hate Crimes as weekend college hi jinx....Reminds me of the "Number Six" from Blazing Saddles.

Taggart: I got it. I got it.
Hedley Lamarr: You do?
Taggart: We'll work up a "Number 6" on 'em.
Hedley Lamarr: "Number 6"? I'm afraid I'm not familiar with that one...
Taggart: Well, that's where we go a-ridin' into town, a whampin' and whompin' every livin' thing that moves within an inch of its life. Except the women folks, of course.
Hedley Lamarr: You spare the women?

They said his supporters "booed a jew" at a debate.

Do you mean DailyKos, MoveOn, DU folks, and their local counterpart RaisingKaine have said Allen's supporters booed a jew? That would be stunning considering they've done a lot more than simply boo Lieberman.

If I didn't know better, I'd think the Virginia Senate election was the only thing on the ballot this year. What's the deal with everyone's obsessing over this one particular seat?

Oh, this is rich. Somebody needs to ask Born Idiot how it feels when the "racist" label's being applied to HIM.

This is going to get buried so fast by the Drive-by Media, you know. Democrats (except some Southern ones like Zell Miller) can't possibly be racists according to them. Only Republicans.

Why do you think the Webb campaign is so desperate to paint Allen with the racist, "he used a bad word", brush?

After Webb's comment yesterday, I knew it was only a matter of time until something like this surfaced. I had found it odd that Webb seemed to have little of his personal life in the public arena, but only his professional life.

I wonder who else will come forward. I would like to hear from some people who worked with him in the Pentagon.
