CA: Judging Jerry's judgment (Jerry Brown vs Chuck Poochigian for AG)

Judging Jerry's judgment

WILLIAM E. SARACINO

The Republican nominee for California attor ney general, state Sen. Chuck Poochigian, is exceptionally well qualified for the office through both experience and temperament. That being said, his electoral success largely depends not so much on his ability to convince voters that he'd make a good attorney general, but to convince them that his opponent, Jerry Brown, would be a disaster.

If Poochigian can focus Califor nian's attention on one straightforward point — that the A.G.'s job all comes down to judgment — the door will be open for him to show that, in that category, Jerry Brown has failed too many times in too many important areas for him to be trusted again. Consider three women who played prominent roles while he was governor.

First, as, perhaps, least odious: Adriana Gianturco. For the record, Gianturco brought meager qualifications to run any state department, let alone one dealing with California's massive transportation system. Despite this, Brown appointed her head of Caltrans.

Gianturco's tenure provides Brown's GOP opponent ample material to illustrate her lethal combination of incompetence and autocratic manner which thoroughly demoralized the work-force within the department. Her lasting damage to California, however, was not the internal chaos she fostered, but rather the utterly failed "diamond lane" experiment. Like her boss, Gianturco tended to fall captive to every passing liberal "cause du jour." In transportation, it was "diamond lanes" — those very expensive, under-utilized special lanes that punish motorists for the sin of daring to drive alone. Gianturco, strongly backed by Brown, forced those on California's unwilling motorists, and those abominations remain with us today. Thanks, Jerry.

Next in line would be Miss Jane Fonda. Yes, that Jane Fonda, the treasonous airhead who repeatedly visited Hanoi to pose on anti-aircraft guns used to shoot down American pilots; the Jane Fonda who said our POW's were "liars and hypocrites" for reporting the torture it was later proved their communist captors inflicted on them. Facing a vacancy on the California Arts Council, Jerry Brown could find nobody more qualified then Hanoi Jane among California's 25 million citizens, so she was given the honor of the gubernatorial nomination. Thanks, Jerry.

Saving the worst for last, we come to Rose Bird. Bird had been Brown's chauffeur — yes, you read that right — when Brown named her to head the Department of Agriculture. Like Gianturco, who had known nothing about transportation, Bird knew nothing about agriculture, the largest single part of California's multi-billion dollar yearly economy. And as with Gianturco, Bird's incompetence and elitism soon had the department in chaos.

Ah, yes, Rose Bird...reason enough to vote against Mayor Moonbeam even if there were no other.

This election isn't Jerry Brown vs. Chuck Poochigian. It's Jerry Brown vs. Not-Jerry Brown. I expect Not-Jerry Brown will win.

I watched a video last week of him speaking at the signing of some piece of legislation last week. He was very impressive. His pictures don't do him justice, particularly the one he put on the banner.

I like this one better... he looks fun!

Has the polls close up since Poch has gone on the attack? I know Brown was at 55 forever.

Jerry Brown epitomizes the perfect Liberal, e.g., anti-America, anti-military, pro-criminal, never met a tax he didn't like.

I'm interested in what a pro-criminal AG will do. And I certainly have no vote being registered in Maryland. This fascinates me to no end.

Why can't Brown retire? He's been in fricking government for decades. Typical liberal sponging off the taxpayers. My only respect for him was during the 1992 Dem primary when he stood up to Clinton.

Brown will not ask for the death penality in any case over which he has jusidiction. Brown will not seek extradition for any suspect that faces a possibilty of a death sentence in California unless that possibility is waived by the prosecuting DA. It's that simple.

Funny thing happened to me today. I know next to nothing about Mr. Poochigian other than he hails from Fresno. Knowing his opponent though was enough to secure my vote for Mr. Poochigian and I needed to know nothing further. Anyway, I'm driving my kid to school, listening to the radio and a Jerry Brown attack ad comes on. I listen to it and when it's finished I say out loud "Damn, Poochigian sounds like my kind of guy!" Heh heh.
