Romney can't possibly deny he's been for abortion in the past. If he's changed his mind on the issue, he needs to admit it and clearly explain what caused the change. But the way he's acting now it looks like a convenient switcheroo to make himself a more palatable candidate for President.

Al Gore did the same thing; back in the 80s he was more rational, then drifted towards the far left.

It worked for him.

He was for abortion before he was against it.

Seems to be a lot of that going on in that state.

Maybe, but can't people evolve and after looking at an issue decide they were once on the wrong side of it? I know I've changed several of my views over the years, not out of political expediency since I have not and will never run for office, but simply because as I studied them I realized I was on the wrong side of a few things. I'm saying all this and I'm not necessarily supporting Romney in 08. He's one of several I'm considering supporting and haven't made a decision yet.

Romney claims he switched his abortion position after discovering the lack of respect for human life while studying the stem cell and cloning issues among those in the scientific community. He realized that attitude is pervasive among some in the medical and research communities and felt he needed to re-evaluate his position on abortion, which was that he was personally opposed to it but felt government should not have a role in it.

So really, his personal position on abortion didn't change. He was always personally opposed to the practice. Only his views on the public role in the decision-making. I think it's an honest switch one could make. And in the end, nothing he did as governor that I'm aware of in any way furthered the availability of abortion.

If Romney were in the habit of constantly changing positions like John Kerry, then he could I think be truly said to be a flip flopper. But I think most intelligent and thinking adults have at one time or another changed position on an issue or two. I can allow Romney this one. At least he's come over to the right side of things on it.
