FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Democratic Senate challenger Jim Webb declined to say definitively Tuesday whether he had ever used a common derogatory term to describe blacks, stepping carefully after watching his campaign rival confront charges of racism. “I don’t think that there’s anyone who grew up around the South that hasn’t had the word pass through their lips at one time or another in their life,” Webb told reporters.

That doesn't sound like a denial to me. Same goes for people up north. It's impolite, it's in poor taste, and if used against another as an insult, it's fighting words. But it's not a thing that a person should be stigmatized for life over.

Nobody's asking Jessie Jackson whether or not he's ever called anybody a "hymie" after all.

See, Webb pretty much admits his use of it as well, however, becuase he is a Democrat, he will be given a pass. Allen will be publicly skewered for allegations of his use by mostly anonymous sources.

But according to Webb's staff and groupies, use of the word makes a person a racist. So applying that standard, he's a racist and so is anyone on his staff who "grew up around the South."

The real lesson in this saga is that the United States is richer than any of us realize. If we weren't unbelievably prosperous, we would not waste 10 minutes on this lunacy.

What was the response by the sanctimonious hypocrites who were present when Allen was supposed to have said that earth shaking word? Did they correct him, or try to make him ashamed?Or did they smile and sigh because they themselves used the same word plenty of times.

Amen to your words. I totally agree. I also agree that anyone over the age of 50 has used that word.It was commonly used in the 50's, 60's and 70's not that it was a good term to use. But there were also bad terms used for people belonging to certain religious groups. I do not think this criticism of Allen holds water. It is a Rat dirty trick. Allen had been Virginia's govenor, representative, and senator for a number of years and if using this word was so compelling and disgusting, why wasn't it ever brought up before? It just tells me the Rats are desperate and a desperate Rat is a gross thing.
