Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has a commanding 17-point lead over Democratic rival Phil Angelides with just six weeks to go until the November 7 election, according to a just released Public Policy Institute of California poll.

Forty-eight percent of likely voters support the Republican governor, with just 31 percent saying they would vote for Angelides, who is currently the state treasurer.

Prop 1B does not give you roads. It gives you port fences and innercity rail, for twice the cost given the borrowing. The 37 Billion in borrowed money will cost $75 billion with interest. It's a total waste of funds and will do little to fix the roads.

They have their priorities all wrong. Vote NO and send them back to the drawing board.

Yes, facts are those little things that reveal your true colors: Democrat Blue.

No, facts are what I posted a link to, showing that more than half of REPUBLICANS OPPOSED PROP 76.

This is why the lower offices, like Lt. Guv, with Tom Mc, Poochigan for Att. Gen, and others is important in this landslide by Arnold. He should be encouraged by mail, to campaign as a team with these people. It would bring in GOP office holders where none were thought to have had a chance just 9 months ago. Someone has to put Arnold's email up for Freepers and then he should be flooded with congrats , support and demands he campaign for these other Ca. Gopers. Poor Dick Mountjoy is a fine person and DiFi will beat him by a million votes.

Arnold quietly has done a lot of fundraising for them.

That's why McClintock is so well financed.

"Schwarzenegger, a prodigious fund-raiser, helped McClintock amass about $500,000 for his 2004 Senate race. This year, McClintock has been invited to meet-and-greets with well-heeled Schwarzenegger donors. "

The governor could also help generate publicity for McClintock and earn him crossover appeal with independents and Democrats. If the governor solidly wins re-election, McClintock and other Republican candidates for statewide office could ride his coattails.

ROFL! Where do you get this stuff? He wouldn't even acknowledge Poochigian at a recent fundraiser. Completely ignored the man.

The minority in the leg can't do anything.

Suggest a review of California's constitution process.

far too many conservatives didn't turn out in 2005..

This remains the great urban myth promulgated by Republican moderates and liberals. There is no direct evidence of that contention beyond voter registration and nonpartisan participation stats.

His more liberal behavior as of late can be traced DIRECTLY back to his crushing defeat at the 2005 special election. It cut the heart out of his credibility, and took away his most powerful negotiating tool: That he'd go to the people to do what the legislature wouldn't.

Once again curious logic:

1) Liberal pursuits caused by a crushing, popular defeat in late 2005.
2) Disarmed by the electorate, he is forced to capitulate.

With regard to the executive, the legislative process involves the electorate every four years. Between election cycles, the constitutional, legislative process prevails. The legislative majority submits all but budgets and taxation to the governor for approval. If disapproved by the executive, the legislative minority then controls the process.

He screwed up the timing. He should have done it in 2004 when he was still popular instead of 2005 when there wasn't anything else going on and he could be the focus of the $100mil the unions used to beat him.

The single biggest mistake of Schwarzenegger's first term came in 2003, the day he took office. In a rush to be popular, he made a costly blunder because he acted impulsively. The consequences of that rush to judgment, wound through 2004 and by 2005 the Austrian had not only alienated the majority of his own party's membership, but also the vast majority of his Republican brethren in the state legislature. The die was cast. In the fall of 2005, for a second time in his short political career, he rushed the process again, supporting initiatives he neither proposed nor desired and then compounded the foolishness but staking his political career on a horse he didn't trust.

The governor could also help generate publicity for McClintock and earn him crossover appeal with independents and Democrats.

A reminder that this forum is not being conducted in a third grade class room. Many on this forum have hands-on, elected experience and understand the basics of crossover appeal and it's not standing next to a popular liberal and smiling.

Senator McClintock does not desire crossover appeal. He desires access to Schwarzenegger's victims. Given ten minutes, the Senator can probably convince an independent or conservative Democrat of the wisdom of following sound, fiscal principles in times of finical crisis.

Senator McClintock's uncanny ability to instill financial reason in his audience is probably the chief reason that both you (the CAGOP) and Schmidt will not let McClintock share the podium with the Austrian or have proportional, state party, financial resources to campaign against a high, name recognition opponent. Within 10 minutes, the Senator's audience would realize that King Schwarzenegger is not wearing any clothing.

We need the transportation bond

Why do we need the so-called transportation bond? Since less than 40% of it actually goes for road related projects, and of those, ALL of it could still be spent on commie-lanes or traffic flow studies, and NONE of it actually guarantees any new freeway lanes that all drivers can use....tell us, why do we need to borrow $20 Billion of our grandchildren's money?

Because the bond-brokers are counting on it?

Arnold had a multipage glossy mailer out last week opposing the Prop 80's. The other props were not mentioned pro or con.

Is there anything or anyone you *do* vote *for*?

You're absolutely right about the reform agenda. It should've come a year earlier when the opposition were still off balance. He got bad advice from the Wilson crowd.

Well, he's on record as supporting 3 of the 7, so I don't know what you were looking at. (See post 35 or joinarnold.com)

Is there anything or anyone you *do* vote *for*?

Yep, all the time. I support Mountjoy (R), McClintock (R), Poochigian (R), Strickland (R), McPherson (R), Poizner (R), and Parrish (R) as well as Props 85 and 90 (I'm still undecided on 83).

All Arnold has to do is keep his mouth shut and not do anything until election day and he will win in a landslide.

And don't show him things like this...

As to the unions, I fail to see how alienating the electorate by insulting teachers and unions, along with all of their family members was very "conservative", especially when the result of the initiative would have had little impact.

Your organized labor loyalties are showing. There were no insults except those directed at the union bosses and their excessive, wildly disproportionate political power to advance Rat causes and candidates.

They ran a completely inept campaign.

It wasn't perfect but inept campaign is what you get from Bill Simon, not when you've got $100 million worth of a mortgaged-and-compulsory-dues fed war chest aimed at you for a year-long slander campaign.

Considering how you were AGAINST the efforts, I'd have thought you would praise the "inept campaign"... curious.

Furthermore, some initiatives were funded by Democrats and Rinos--hardly looking to achieve any conservative objectives. In fact, the Redistricting measure was opposed by a majority of our Republican legislators. But keep spinning the leftist myth that "conservatives can't win." The leftists appreciate your efforts.

Our Republican legislators are protectionist political power addicts and deathly afraid of competing for their seats every bit as much as the Rats.

When, pray tell, in the past 10-15 years have "conservatives" won across the state in CA? To think they can win is the same delusion that fronts candidates like Bill Simon and recruits token opposition such as Dick Mountjoy.

No matter what you say, even you can't ignore that Arnold supported Parental Notification and conservatives *did not* come out for that in his reform election. It lost.

The time to move candidates forward is the primary season. Doesn't always work as the 50th showed with conservatives splitting the vote across a half-dozen candidates allowing Mr. Mush Bilbray to eek out over another "buy-a-seat" fake conservative and aptly named Roach. Like it or not we have our candidates now, support them or get out of the way. Your trashing Arnold 24-7 agenda provides aide-and-comfort to the Rats.

Good news but it's still too early to cheer. The L.A Slimes hasn't done their election eve weekend hit piece on Arnold yet.

Your organized labor loyalties are showing.

I have no labor loyalties. I do know people who have teachers in their family and they were insulted by the combative nature of the campaign. They may have intended to be attacking the bosses, but that is not the message that came across. How many people in the electorate have a family member or friend that is in a union? Answer: A whole bunch!

It wasn't perfect but inept campaign is what you get from Bill Simon...

I will defer to a Republican expert who observed from the sidelines and called the election a "largely foreseeable disaster." I agree with his assessment and "inept" is a nice description compared to what he had to say. By the way, he predicted before the election that the GOP would blame its failures on conservatives not showing up. LOL. It was all in their script!

EXCLUSIVE PRE-ELECTION INTERVIEW WITH ARNIE STEINBERG,
Another Interview With Arnie Steinberg (Republican Strategist/Analyst)

Considering how you were AGAINST the efforts...

I didn't think any of the initiatives solved major problems in the State nor did they rise to the level of urgency to justify a special election. Despite the inept campaign, I supported Prop 74 (teacher tenure), Prop 75 (union contributions) and Prop 73 (parental notification) and am on record on these threads for months (check my tagline back then). The redistricting measure was financed by Dems and Rinos had major flaws that would have ended up in the courts for years. The "spending cap" wasn't a cap at all, would not have curtailed spending and authorized $10 billion in new bonds. Did I oppose Prop 78, the Prescription Drug program for which the GOP filled my voicemail machine and mailbox daily? You betcha! Nothing conservative there! So much for you trying to smear me, NJ. Your allegations have no substance.

No matter what you say, even you can't ignore that Arnold supported Parental Notification and conservatives *did not* come out for that in his reform election. It lost.

He supported it? ROFL! It was not included on any mailer from Arnold. If pressed by the Media, he would say he supported it but took NO overt action to promote it or sell it to the electorate. AND... Despite the LACK of support, it did the best of ANY measure in the election. The vote counts themselves show that more conservatives showed up than the middle-mush moderates that brought us our liberal action hero governor.

Suggest a review of California's constitution process.

Unless it says 'minority wins', there isn't much they can do but block.

Sure, they can keep tax increases from coming because of the 2/3rds rule, but Arnold's been excellent on that issue anyway.

This remains the great urban myth promulgated by Republican moderates and liberals. There is no direct evidence of that contention beyond voter registration and nonpartisan participation stats.

Umm, yah, you aren't correct.

It's not that hard: Orange County had relatively low turnout, downtown L.A. had higher turnout, etc.

I'm not accusing conservatives of 'selling him out' like Fair Opinion is, I don't think that's true, but it's hard to credibly argue that the Unions didn't have a FAR better GOTV effort.

Yah...you really don't understand how politics really works. There's such a thing as 'political capital', 'bargaining power', etc. They don't write them down in the Constitution but they are every bit as big of a part of government as anything else.

And if you don't understand why he got wiped out in 2005, you don't understand politics.

In the fall of 2005, for a second time in his short political career, he rushed the process again, supporting initiatives he neither proposed nor desired and then compounded the foolishness but staking his political career on a horse he didn't trust.

Huh?!?!?!

If he didn't believe in them, it's sure odd that he not only campaigned heavily for them, but spent his OWN MONEY on the ad campaign.

It looks like a double digit win for the Austrian liberal. Who doesn't need conservatives to do it.

Their version of Big Government is to help their friends. Lately, these seem to be venture capitalists. The passel of measures on the ballot is the New Majority's vision of California Republicanism. It ain't conservative and it ain't populist.
