RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- A noted political scientist joined one of Sen. George Allen's former college football teammates in claiming the senator used a racial slur to refer to blacks in the early 1970s, a claim Allen dismisses as ''ludicrously false.''
Larry J. Sabato, one of Virginia's most-quoted political science professors and a classmate of Allen's in the early 1970s, said in a televised interview Monday that Allen used the epithet.
Sabato's assertion came on the heels of accusations by Dr. Ken Shelton, a radiologist who was a tight end and wide receiver for the University of Virginia in the early 1970s when Allen was quarterback. He said Allen not only used the n-word frequently but also once stuffed a severed deer head into a black family's mailbox.

You can probably bet good money that her thighness is behind this. It was reported a few months ago that the candidate she fears the most is George Allen. Likely this is her way of attempting to gut him before he has a chance.
Allen ping.
Thanks for that info..............now I know why I know that name.
Thanks for a post that makes sense ... I am not exactly crazy about Sabato but doubt he's a fool, which he would have to be to validate any such rumor with first hand witness. It would not only invalidate whatever objectivity he's credited with having in all political matters, it would raise the question, as has been done on this thread, about where he was in '93 and '00.
I can believe any jock, esp in the early 70's, would have used that word .. they still do, including black players. It's just that white guys can't say it. Especially politicians. Especially GOP politicians.
I haven't had time to read the thread. But Sabato has backed off of this today. He admits he never heard Allen say the word.
Interestingly enough, here on the Eastern Shore the Democrats, at least the ones I know, are incensed by the Webb campaign.......none of them plan on voting for Webb, some have said they will vote for Allen, others have said they will just skip that race when they vote.
Have you seen this?
Looks to me like this incident occurred roughly 100 miles southeast of Charlotte, while Hendersonville is about that distance southwest.
Weird, huh?
Thanks. I'll be using that.
"what do we know about Professor Sabato"
we know he has kept this to himself till Allen backed the Marriage Amenment.
