Rumsfeld favors a new Africa command

US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said he favors setting up a separate command to oversee US military operations and relations in Africa.
"Pete and I are for it," Rumsfeld said, referring to General Peter Pace, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
"We've been pushing and pushing for six months and trying to get the system to come up with the details as to how it would be done," he said.
One key decision that is yet to be made is whether the command would be on par with other combatant commands for Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, Latin America and North America.
Pace, who joined Rumsfeld at a meeting with Pentagon employees, said another alternative was to set it up under the US European Command, which currently has responsibility for most of Africa as well as Europe.
The US military has given greater attention to Africa in recent years amid concerns that extremist groups are seeking to exploit areas outside governments' control.

If we do create AFCOM, I hope the HQ is located in Europe, not Africa.
We don't need to subject hundreds of HQ personnel to actually living in Africa, in my opinion.

They did not specify. Probably some small island off the coast of E. Africa where most of Jihadi actions could be?
Any small islands off the coast of Africa are still the national territory of someone. And I'm not aware of any countries in the area that like us enough to host our military forces. And even if one can be found, what are we going to do? Station still more brigades overseas so we can add that to the troop rotation? Twelve months in Iraq, twelve months in Africa, twelve months in Afganistan, then back to Iraq again?

Why not Djibouti?
The French are in Djibouti. You think they're going to let us in?
We're already there.
And they're there because they're flying below the radar screen. If we set up a command HQ there then the French are going to have to answer some questions, and I don't see them doing that.
Why in the Hell do we have to get militarily involved in Africa?
Jihadis may set up a new staging ground.
Then why aren't we invading London?
