Top Generals Hint at Army Expansion of 60,000 Troops
ABC News | Sept. 25, 2006 | By JONATHAN KARL

The strain on the Army from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan has become so great that top officials are now privately saying the only long-term solution may be to make the overall size of the Army bigger, adding as many as 60,000 troops, ABC News has learned.

It's not a request or a recommendation yet, but senior Army officials have discussed this for weeks and are now in agreement that the Army could meet its worldwide obligations more easily by expanding the overall size of its force.

We have the 60,000 troops, it's called the European Theatre of Operations and Korean Theatre of Operations. We have to have force which is no longer defined by geography.

Yawn. More politically motivated criticism of Rummy, and by extension, the President.

No, what they are trying to imply is that the Draft is coming back.

So you're suggesting we abandon these theatres of operation?

"Mr. Senior Army Official" has been pretty busy this past week...this has got to be the sixth of seventh press release I've seen quoting him lately.

Well, we are closing down Korea, but we need higher authorized end strength. Helps with the rotations. That's just common sense.

Chris

I think we need to reassess our priorities to examine whether the political climate in these locations would allow the United States to effectively operate and to carry out foreign policy goals.

They aren't talking about that though. They are talking about increasing the size.

You wouldn't be yawning if it was you doing multiple year and a half tours in Iraq. Just because it is criticism of Rummy, and by extension, the President, doesn't make it unwarranted.

Find me a Soldier who says the Army is big enough for the job at hand.

What do you mean by "Be seeing you" Chris? I'm a veteran and am not worried if there is a draft. I'm not medically able to serve anyway, unfortunately, or else I would be seeing you.

I think soldiers need a pay increase and need an increase in benefits, however, if we got troops stationed in Bad Kurtz doing nothing, then why not reassign them???

It's a bit more than a few troops. The army is granstanding for 25Billion more dollars. Money doesnt grow on trees. It will have to come from the other services, who are taking cuts as well to maintain opstempo and purchase new weapons systems.

Having 2 million folks under arms, they should be able to make accomodations for rotations in theater without adding 100K more troops.

If they want more money for tanks and artillery, which is an Army thing, they wont get it. If they ask for transformational systems that take less manpower, they can probably get it.

Wow, took long enough.

The brass didn't want to admit they need a larger force. Just looking at the rotation schedule for active and reserve units, it was obvious they needed more forces. The question is how soon could they even stand up more units.

If you have had any experience with draftees, you would have answered your own question.

Whats the matter with a draft?

The dems are in favor of it, so there must be something wrong with it...they're always wrong.

Actually, I suspect the reason the dems are in favor of a draft is so they can complain that there are nonvolunteers dying in a war not of their choosing. Their claims currently ring pretty hollow because we have an all voluntary military.

As long as I've been reading FR, Section 9 has signed out that way.
