Whats the matter with a draft?

The dems are in favor of it, so there must be something wrong with it...they're always wrong.

Actually, I suspect the reason the dems are in favor of a draft is so they can complain that there are nonvolunteers dying in a war not of their choosing. Their claims currently ring pretty hollow because we have an all voluntary military.

Do you ever recall so many complaints leaking out of the Pentagon as we're seeing now...just a few months before the election.

If I were a cynical person I'd say the DNC is trying to force the GOP into increasing spending (which they will oppose without a tax increase) or look weak on defense.

That is just one of the reasons. The other is that, with a draft, they would be better able to marshal mass protests against the war.

They remember only too well how "popular" the anti-war movement was in Viet Nam -- until Nixon ended the draft. And, then, people stopped showing up for the riots...

The Democrats want a draft because, not because one is needed, but because it would give them some political leverage.
