Suspect: I prefer drink to Koran

(Filed: 26/09/2006)

A suspected terrorist accused of plotting a bomb attack claimed he was more interested in girls and drinking than Islamic extremism.

Anthony Garcia, 24, admitted he bought 1,300lb (600kg) of ammonium nitrate fertiliser, which could have been used to make a huge explosive device, on the orders of his friend Omar Khyam, 24, the alleged leader of the plot.

But, he told the Old Bailey, he thought it was to be shipped to Pakistan.

Garcia denied he was a devout Muslim and told the court he had wanted to become a model or play professional basketball. He changed his name from Rhaman Adam because Anthony Garcia "had a better ring to it" he told jurors.

He also claimed he was more into "girls, going out and drinking" than the teachings of the Koran.

Garcia admitted that after watching a video at an Islamic Society meeting at the University of North London he had raised tens of thousands of pounds to help Muslims in occupied Kashmir re-build their houses and buy weapons to "defend" their property,

He also admitted Khyam got him in to a military training camp in Pakistan after others had refused him because he was white and did not speak the language.

He told the court he bought the ammonium nitrate from Bodle Brothers, in Sussex, and transported it to Access Storage in west London.

Barrister Matthew Ryder asked him: "What did you think was going to happen to the fertiliser?"

"It was to be shipped out to Pakistan," answered Garcia, who added he had not heard anything more about the fertiliser until he was arrested on March 30, 2004.

It is claimed Garcia was part of a group of British Muslims intent on blowing up civilian targets in the UK but who were arrested before they finalised targets.

Khyam, his brother Shujah Mahmood, 19, Waheed Mahmood, 34, Jawad Akbar, 23, all from Crawley, Sussex, Salahuddin Amin, 31, from Luton, Beds, Garcia, from Barkingside and Nabeel Hussain, 21, from Horley, all deny conspiring to cause explosions likely to endanger life between Jan 1, 2003 and Mar 31, 2004. Khyam, Garcia and Hussain also deny a charge under the Terrorism Act of possessing ammonium nitrate fertiliser for terrorism.

The trial continues.

The radical muslims I've met don't turn down drinks...and most love strip clubs. But they'll raise holy hell to make sure no pork was in their food.

Aren't they permitted to humor the infidel and have a few lap dances while they bide until the time is right for our destruction?

The only person I know whom I would consider to be a radical muslim (or at least a muslim with some radical opinions) is female, drinks like a fish, and wears strapless tops when she goes out. I stopped associating with her after I heard her unload a giant filthy rant about how much she hates Jews.

"It was to be shipped out to Pakistan," answered Garcia

Good one! The closest place to Pakistan you can get ammonium nitrate is England.

It's as good as a play! The ringleader's name . . .

But come with old Khayyám, and leave the Lot
Of Kaikobád and Kaikhosrú forgot!
Let Rustum lay about him as he will,
Or Hátim Tai cry Supper--heed them not.

You know, my Friends, with what a brave Carouse
I made a Second Marriage in my house;
Divorced old barren Reason from my Bed,
And took the Daughter of the Vine to Spouse.

And lately, by the Tavern Door agape,
Came shining through the Dusk an Angel Shape
Bearing a Vessel on his Shoulder; and
He bid me taste of it; and 'twas--the Grape!

The Grape that can with Logic absolute
The Two-and-Seventy jarring Sects confute:
The subtle Alchemist that in a Trice
Life's leaden Metal into Gold transmute.

The mighty Mahmúd, Allah-breathing Lord,
That all the misbelieving and black Horde
Of Fears and Sorrows that infest the Soul
Scatters before him with his whirlwind Sword.

Why, be this Juice the growth of God, who dare
Blaspheme the twisted tendril as a Snare?
A Blessing, we should use it, should we not?
And if a Curse--why, then, Who set it there?

- from The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam

(Fitzgerald translation).

Or maybe:(E. H. Whinfield translation):

" Men say the Koran holds all heavenly lore,
But on its pages seldom care to pore;
The lucid lines engraven on the bowl---
That is the text they dwell on evermore"

For “IS” and “IS-NOT” though with Rule and Line
And “UP-AND-DOWN” by Logic I define,
Of all that one should care to fathom, I
Was never deep in anything but—Wine.

And David's lips are lockt; but in divine
High-piping Péhlevi, with "Wine! Wine! Wine!"
Red Wine!"--the Nightingale cries to the Rose
That sallow cheek of hers to incarnadine.

Overall though, I have to say that FitzGerald's translation is the more poetic. I may be prejudiced in favor of Fitzgerald, because I'm used to his version, but it seems to me that Whinfield's rendering of "The moving finger writes" is just lame.
