Ever since it was articulated by a 16th century Spanish missionary to South America, the prevailing theory has been that the first inhabitants of the Americas were big-game hunters who crossed a 1,000-mile land bridge from Asia, slogging down into the Great Plains through an inland corridor created by receding glaciers.

That seems like a rather advanced understanding of things for a 16th century missionary.

Uh, and the land bridge was 1000 miles long?

As I understand plate tectonics, the continents have been separating at Atlantic ocean, not the Pacific. In other words, Russia and Alaska are moving closer together, not farther apart, as the ancient "land bridge" theory would suggest.
