Ancient tradition calls for you to be buried standing up, faced in the same direction as the doorway in the home immediately above you, because they did this under the front steps.

That's "kind of East", and that has to do with optimizing light, and heat.

I don't recall a specific Christian tradition regarding the orientation of gravestones ~ after all, Jesus can arrive over any part of the horizon He wishes. He is not bound by the Sun.

Go look at some cemetaries sometimes. All I have ever been in you are lying on your back feet to the east. Waiting the coming of Christ. Everyone. I will be planted facing EAST not Mecca.
