Freelance journalist Josh Wolf returned to federal prison today after refusing to produce the outtakes of video footage he shot at a violent San Francisco protest in July 2005.
"Even though they're going to take me into custody, they can't silence me," Wolf, 24, said at a news conference outside the prison before turning himself in. "It's frightening. I don't feel I should have to return to prison. I don't think it was about me. I was probably the easiest target."
Wolf, 24, had a deadline of 1 p.m. today to report to the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin. He was originally to have surrendered two days ago, but won a 48-hour extension by the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday to give him time to put his affairs in order.
Wolf spent a month behind bars at the same Dublin prison but was released on his own recognizance Sept. 1 while his appeal was heard.
Last week, a three-judge panel of the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected Wolf's appeal of a lower court's decision to hold him in contempt for refusing to produce the outtakes in response to a federal grand jury subpoena. The same three judges granted a federal prosecutor's motion to revoke bail Monday.
"It's just an unfortunate and unjust and illegal act for Josh to be jailed for not turning over his unedited tape," said one of Wolf's supporters, filmmaker Kevin Epps, 36, of San Francisco.

I'm a journalist! I was editor of my college newspaper! I don't have to comply with subpoenas!

ADIOS MOFO!
they can't silence me," Wolf, 24, said how does wanting to look at his criminal video attempt to silence his fagazz???
First the two "reporters" in the BALCO steroids case, and now this guy. Amazing the arrogance and self importance those in the media bestow upon themselves. They really think that they are better than everyone else - above the law.
He's a punk, who will be prison gp-fodder, very quickly. Rot in hell, liberal-demokkkRAT butt-boy!
I hope these journalists stick by their guns, I'd rather have journalists free to do the things they are accused of than a government that can put them in jail for those things, particularly on the excuse that "the attempted burning was a federal crime because the Police Department receives money from Washington."
