I have a friend who was receiving Newsweek regularly even though they didn't subscribe. This couple is very well off and donates heavily to the Republican party. I agree that a good share of these "freebies" are geared toward manipulating the "desirables."

With all that has happened over the last 5 years, it's telling that the New York Times was most outraged by Abu Grab...as revealed by it's breathless coverage of the incident - over 50 front page stories!
