Bush, McCain reach agreement on tribunal laws

President Bush and Sen. John McCain have reached an agreement on legislation covering tribunals for enemy combatant suspects, NBC News reported Thursday.

Details on the deal were not immediately available.

The compromise comes amid a stalemate that has divided the House and Senate on the treatment of detainees. The two sides remained at odds this week over how to adhere to the 1949 Geneva Conventions and — simultaneously — give the CIA wide leeway to conduct interrogations.

All that aside, McCain will still be a champion, patriot, and hero regardless of whether he was railroaded by his own ambitions.

POTUS paved the way during his presser the other day to give McCain a graceful way out. POTUS is the patriot and a class act to boot.

Re: The Deal [Jonah Goldberg]

This strikes me as a great SNL skit opportunity. What if at the press conference they take a play from Abbot and Costello (and countless other sources) and had a enemy combatant — Horatio Sanz as Khlaid Sheik Mohammed would be the obvious choice — up there to demonstrate what you can and can't do? Like the referee rabbit punching Lou Costello, Hadley could say "You can't do this?" And then McCain could chime in with "No, but under our compromise you can do this" and then he could give him a Three Stooges smack.

There has to be a deal or POTUS is shutting down the program.

Actually, I don't think he will do it directly. The CIA chief will simply step forward and state unequivocally that all operating CIA detention facilities are now closing down. All future detainees will be shipped directly to Cuba and interrogated by the military.

It is the only option. There is no point to having them if a deal cannot be brokered.

Dont get your hopes up. Bush always caves to McCain. FNC reporting that Lindsey smiling and saying how happy he is. This was one time Bush needed to back up his words with action regarding McCain and all signs are that he has capitulated again. I am disgusted.

Garham is always happy when ever he gets to spend time with McCain. What he going to do? Come out and say he is utterly humilated and destroyed? Probly the fig leaf will be something like the Presidnet has to send someon up their to report to the Senate every 6 months or something. Anything that gives the Senators they feel part of the game.

Too bad it is NOT just a game of US, the American voters.

graham strolled by and said "I'm a happy man."

Of course he did. If this is a face-saving "deal", then he will be strutting, even though Pres. Bush may very well have gotten the better of him and his co-weasels.

"FNC reporting that Lindsey smiling and saying how happy he is"

Lindsay doesn't fool me one bit. He hasn't won a thing with his little tantrum, and hopefully it will cost him his senate seat.

That he said he was a happy "man", was reported by Shep Smith BTW, GAG.
