A hardline Indonesian Muslim cleric, who served time in jail for his role in the 2002 Bali bombings, has warned that scantily-clad women on TV shows are more dangerous than bombs.
"If one is asked which one is more dangerous, naked women or the Bali bomb, the answer is certainly the women with such revealing clothing," cleric Abu Bakar Bashir was quoted by the state Antara news agency as saying.
The report says Bashir warns that watching such women on television can destroy the faith of a believer.
He says he is perplexed as to why the country's TV channels are airing programs with women wearing barely-there outfits "and not programs that are blessed by Allah, such as the activities of prayer groups... "
While TV shows in the world's most populous Muslim nation do feature some women wearing revealing outfits, semi-naked or naked women are strictly off-limits.
Bashir, who heads the Indonesian Mujahedin Council, an umbrella organisation for groups advocating the implementation of Islamic law here, has also labelled as "infidels" Muslim leaders who do not strive to see the law followed.
About 90 per cent of Indonesia's 220 million practise Islam but the vast majority follow a moderate form of the faith.
The state accords equal status to all its recognised religions.
Bashir, 68, was released from jail in June after serving just over two years for his role in a "sinister conspiracy" that led to the Bali bombings, which killed 202 people including 88 Australians.
