It always amuses me, when women fail at some task, their fall back position is their feminie side, a flash of the legs, a thrust of the breasts, the crossing of the legs, any movement that defects attention from what was said....

As Drudge put it, it is a pantyhose commercial

I would bet the farm if CBS and Perky went that direction the ratings would go through the roof.

Yes, the ratings would go through the roof, but they are liberals. Liberalism is a religion to them and it means more than money and ratings. Besides, can you imagine the pressure from the rest of the news media? She would be destroyed.

I haven't watched an instant of her show, but I have to admit I'm a little surprised. I thought she'd pull some ratings just from novelty. She must really be bad. I didn't watch her morning show either...I watched it the day after election day, 04, for fun, but that was it.

Really? I'm actually surprised. She had a lot of viewers. Jane Pauley made the switch years ago, didn't she? Or maybe not. I don't know. I never watch Katie, haven't seen this show, but I thought she'd do OK for a little while.

I'm like you. I sometimes watch Brit. I don't watch any of the other shows.

I wonder where libnuts "get" their news.

Mostly Olberman. I have seen, while lurking in DU, that some of them watch Aljezeera, too. That would probably explain their defending the terrorists.

on the odd occasion that I DO manage to stumble on a news program, it feels so old..

That's the real story. Millions of Americans are plugged into the net at work or at home, and get their news throughout the day. Ppl email each other..."did ya hear willie got busted? did you hear what chavez said" and by day's end, we know all the stories already. 6pm is waaaaay too late.

She sat on the desk, but it was while wearing pants.

CBS needs to wise up and figure out that there is only one reason why people tune in to see Katie Couric.

They need to take away the world's largest anchor desk and bring in a couch. Or a "Paula Zahn desk."

You need to be actively recruited by Nielsen and have meters installed on your TV's to be a part of the sample of persons used to project ratings - either National or Local. Nielsen monitors the viewing habits of a relatively small portion of the nation's households and viewers. They statistically project those numbers out to the total population to report Viewership Ratings, Audience share and other levels of data used by the Broadcasting and Advertising community.

Your Cable provider does have ways of collecting and reporting on viewership (depending on the level of equipment you are using)but that data is not included in the Nielsen ratings you read. Some Cable providers use the data to negotiate rates for airtime but for viewership data to be included in Nielsen reportage, that data needs to adhere to some fairly strict guidelines. To project a National or Local sample "out" to a larger population, the sampled persons need to be in a relative proportion to the characteristics of the larger National or Local group. Cable companies don't do that - they can only report total viewers, Nielsen must be able to estimate viewers of specific demographic breaks such as age, education, Household Income....and believe it or not, dog and cat ownership.

If you are curious, I can answer questions on methodology and such

Wow, thanks for setting us straight! Very interesting.... Glad to know I can occasionally gawk at some liberal programs without fearing I am being counted as a viewer.

Those geniuses at CBS... that's it, hire a woman who is utterly despised by 50% of the viewing population as your new anchorperson. Boy, those ratings will just shoot through the roof! And vastly overpay her as well! How can it fail?

IDIOTS!

(Didn't they also make this mistake with Bryant Gumbal before?!)

Looks like CBS News committed suicide by hiring Couric.

I think the problem is more with the producers of the show than Katie. Their decision to use their 22 minutes of broadcast time for fluff instead of news was a terrible mistake.

Speaking of Nielsen, they're now talking about going to 50,000 active meters (from the current 1,500) to monitor television viewing and have all the meters measure viewing at a level normally associated with November/February/May sweeps period monitoring the entire year. The reason is simple: monitoring hardware is now very cheap and thanks to wide availability of Internet access, the meters can report back to Neilsen far easier than in the past.

This monitoring change could dramatically alter how network programmers decide on what programs get and stay on the air, since it allows much more comprehensive breakdowns of viewer demographics than currently. Under this new system, a supposedly low-rated show like the recently cancelled Arrested Development will still be on the air, because with the much higher sampling rate Nielsen could note that there is a very loyal viewership for this show that is highly desired by advertisers. Also, with 50,000 active meters there will be no more overnight initial ratings since the ratings data will now come in faster.

It would be very interesting to see the demographic breakdown of The CBS Evening News under the new system--is CBS getting the right viewer demographic to justify paying Couric US$15 million per year?
