I am pretty sure yours are better than Katie's.

My point is that it is all she has, and she doesn't even have that much left. If CBS wants to recoup any of that $15 million they need to ship Katie off to the CBS Early Show, pronto.

She appears to be a Christian.

I promise to stop.

I love Drudge's page today with the Neanderthal skull opposed to Babs. It's like one of those separated at birth collages.

No, no. No need to stop. Quite all right. Jolly good and all. I'm dialing my cable company NOW. With one hand, of course.

To summarize, CBS needs more of this:

And less of this:

I think the Don Henley described these folks pretty well in "Dirty Laundry"

Dirty Laundry - Don Henley
I make my living off the evening news
Just give me something that I can use
People love it when you lose
They love dirty laundry

Well I could have been an actor
But I wound up here
I just have to look good
I don't have to be clear
Come and whisper in my ear
We need dirty laundry

We got the bubble-headed bleach blonde
Comes on at five
She can tell ya 'bout the plane crash
With a gleam in her eye
It's int'resting when people die
Give us dirty laundry

Well I guess life does imitate art after all.

Sample expansion is certainly a good thing but we are most interested in some other refinements. Nielsen is gradually moving to Minute-by-Minute data. They have been reporting "snapshots" of what was going on during the mid-minute of the quarter hour. Lots of room for error using that approach. With minute-by-minute, you get more accurate estimates of audience flow, source, destination and such i.e. where did the viewer come from, where did they go.

Years ago, Nielsen was working on facial recognition in order to automate the system...too complicated. What they were REALLY trying to get at was a measure of Attention Paid. Entities investing in adspace want to get in front of people actually paying attention and what good is/are dollars spent on putting a commercial on the air if people just happen to be in the room and not really paying full attention to what is on?

The future is in People Meters that pick up and report embedded audio signals from encoded sources that are beyond human hearing range. Diaries and set top meters will be history.

She isn't nice. She's never been nice, and she wasn't ever really very perky. She seemed kinda perky when she started at Today, but after she ran Bryant Gumbel off the perkiness wore thin. She was already middle aged then, and now she's fast approaching perky old age. She's not pretty either. They need to get someone like Laurie Dhue to read the news. People would tune in to that. Maybe the White Ho, since it would have to be a left winger.

With Freerepublic, drudge, google news and Yahoo news, et al, why on earth would I even tune in that tripe called TV news. It is SOOO 20th century.

It's not Katie. It's all of them. When I am exposed to that junk from time to time (usually in a hotel room) I am amazed that stuff is still on the air. Some of the comercials are funny though!

A few days ago some Marxist on Craigslist posted how Olberman is kicking O'Reilly's butt.

Today that person is probably looking for a very high building to take a plunge off of.

Especially since I posted the ratings there.

I really think cable has a way of monitoring what you watch.

Not really. The only way they could is if you have a digital box and even then they don't know if the channel is actually being watched.

The Nielson ratings don't take that into account. TIVO does provide some aggregate numbers but they do not figure into the Nielson ratings.

Unless you are a Nielson family, you can watch whatever you want and it won't affect the ratings at all.

This was predictable.

I read a few years ago that the average age of nightly news viewers was something like 64 years old.

Ok these people are probably liberals (GOP hates the poor etc), but they are still products of their time (1940s and 1950s). They don't want a woman giving them a review of the days events. They want a man like walter cronkite.

Meanwhile young people dont even know there is a nightly news and probably wont watch no matter who anchors it.

When you compare her against the greats of Harry Reasoner, Frank Reynolds, or David Brinkley...you sit there in shock at the amusing 30 minutes you get out of her. I don't think she could truely handle any real emergency crisis story that might occur...and that is the real measuring stick of a great news guy. But...as you will see...she will remain through November 2008. CBS is stuck...she must help the democratic party as much as possible as the election runs up. Even having Dan back...might be an improvement...and they sure don't want to admit that.

When we first got Direct TV around 10 yrs ago they put in a phone line to monitor the pay per view and every hour or 2 I would hear it dialing. I just unhooked the phone line because I felt like they were monitoring and I didn't think it was any of their business, once every 24 would be sufficient.

She's never been nice, and she wasn't ever really very perky.

Plus 'perky' seems to suggest a certain naivete. Katie is cold and calculating. She looks beady-eyed and evil. (plus dried up....)
