Poll: New Jersey Senate race remains a tie

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Senate race in New Jersey, which a Republican hasn't won in 34 years, remains virtually tied with less than two months before Election Day, a poll released Wednesday shows.

Among likely voters, including those leaning toward a candidate, Republican challenger Tom Kean Jr. holds a 48-45 percent edge over Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez, the Quinnipiac University poll showed. Six percent remain undecided. This survey of 688 likely voters has an error margin of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Among the 1,233 registered voters surveyed, Menendez has a 41-38 percent edge. This survey has an error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

The state's large bloc of unaffiliated voters is evenly split on whether they support Menendez or Kean, and they hold the key to deciding the election, said Clay Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. In recent history, these voters have swung Democratic.

"Just as importantly, 37 percent (of unaffiliated voters) say they could change their mind before Election Day," Richards said.

The poll held good and bad news for both candidates. By a 48-25 percent margin, voters agree with Menendez that Kean is a "George Bush Republican" who would support administration policies. Kean recently has been critical of Bush on various issues, including the war in Iraq, and has called for Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld to resign. New Jerseyans disapprove 64-33 percent of the way Bush is handling his job, the poll showed.

For Menendez, voters were asked about ethical concerns Kean has raised regarding a stock issue and the renting of a house to a nonprofit agency Menendez helped obtain federal funds. Menendez has never been charged with any wrongdoing during his 32 years in political office.

Does this > "The Senate race in New Jersey, which a Republican hasn't won in 34 years," mean anything to you? What would you suggest?? Do you really think NJ would vote in a hard core conservative?

DRIVE-BY CRAPOLA ALERT:

When GOP is within margin of error do lame-brain-media outlets like CNN say the race is tied in the HEADLINE?

polls are all lies by paid political hacks....

Recently a pollster came to my door here in NJ...the young guys started to ask me questions that just bashed Bush...as soon as I responded with the "wromg" answers agreeing with republicans and disagreeing with lib/dems...the poll was concluded!!!

What did Mark Twain famously once remark, "there are liars, damned liars, and statistics!"...and pollsters either use or are all of these!!!

Yeah, unfortunately, that's as good as it gets in Jersey.

Jersey doesn't sound like a fun place. Glad I've never been there!

Come to think of it, I really enjoyed my trip to Jersey.

It's NEW Jersey I obviously have a major problem with!

If the Democrat candidate was ahead by 3 points, would the headline from CNN.com include the word 'tie'?

Actually, I'll be in NEW Jersey tomorrow. It really is a beautiful state, once you get to know it. Unfortunately like so many other beautiful states, it is a Marxist playground.

Very disturbing.

Yep, but what's more interesting is that the State of NJ would rather be represented by a crooked Democrat than a RINO.

Sorry, I missed your post. I agree. If a Dim never held office of dog-catcher for 34 years, it would be mentioned in headline news.

We send our children to schools to have college graduates who (mostly) finished in the bottom 1/3 of their class for their education, so why not have journalists who also finished (mostly) in the bottom 1/3 of their class educate us adults. Makes sense to me :(

If Bush's ratings are that low in NJ then it is amazing Kean even has a chance. It must say a lot about how weak Menendez is. He is the only incumbent Democrat senator trailing.

Sounds like Kean is no bargain but he will be marginally better, at least. He probably will vote for most of GWB's judicial nominees, or at least will oppose filibusters. Menendez no doubt will continue to oppose any conservative nominee.

Plus we need every pick up we can get to offset possible losses elsewhere. Like Montana. :(

Why are such beautiful places (California, DC - which I totally loved) such Marxist playgrounds?

Got to wonder which crook, fag, unAmerican, mooselimb, killer, k.k.k. member or anti military puke the morons in N.J. are going to vote for in this election.

Always wondered if the cash that flows into the states because of the tourism industry doesn't make the folks that run the joints think there is just an endless supply of fools willing to cough up more.

New Jersey is changing big time. Tons and Tons and Tons of foreign investment.

The Democrat is alleged to TAKE$ 300,000 Dollars, and the trial will begin after the election.

"Unfortunately like so many other beautiful states, it is a Marxist playground."

New Jersey isn't a Marxist playground. It is a criminal playground. Big difference.

The only wealth they redistribute goes into the pockets of the politicians. The poor get squat.

The polls generally do not ask illegal aliens or multiple voters how they will vote and, this being New Jerrsey, that is probably missing the most significant portion of the voting population.
