He said his grandfather's incarceration by the Germans had a profound effect on his mother; that because it was a painful memory, it was almost never discussed. "Some may find it odd that I have not probed deeply into the details of my family history, but it's a fact," Allen said in his statement. Speaking with The Times-Dispatch, Allen said the disclosure is "just an interesting nuance to my background." He added, "I still had a ham sandwich for lunch. And my mother made great pork chops."

LOL,, you are so right
my mother's best friend teaching school was jewish she is a southern girl to the hilt,, she couldn't resist a good BLT sandwich
I'm not Jewish enough to feel guilty about not keeping Kosher, but I am Jewish enough to be hated by anti-Semites."
Perfect.
I'd like to hear a little more from Allen before I'd want him for the top spot. People trading on Tradesport are still ranking McCain as the number 1 spot. I don't see how he does that even with all the help he'll get from the MSM. He's just about my last choice. This time I really do want someone a little smoother and articulate than Dubya. Don't get me wrong I love Bush's bluntness and honesty. I want that too but I also want someone who has a little more of Reagan's silver-tongue.
Let's face it, I believe having some Jewish heritage is a plus in this country. Why Allen would distance himself from this group is bizarre. The way he brought up 'ham and pork' is also quite awkward.
What are you talking about? It's funny what people want to parse through these days.
This article is a perfect follow-up to his official release yesterday.
See, he acknowledged that his GRANDFATHER was jewish. Then the Webbies launched another round of attacks saying that he was admitting the answer to the question was "yes".
But the QUESTION was about whether his MOTHER was jewish. And Allen in this article points out that nobody has any idea whether his GRANDMOTHER was jewish. And by jewish law, you are "born jewish" if your MOTHER is jewish, not just your father.
The biggest non-connected blogger in Virginia, who was neck-deep in the m-word stuff, just got slapped down by the Allen campaign.
They are attacking a guy for having a grandfather who was jewish and imprisoned by the Nazis.
And you are upset because he made a joke about a ham sandwich and pork chops?
Actually, you probably aren't. You are afraid some idiot in the media WILL, and you want your candidates to cater to the stupidity of the media, maybe?
From the article:
Allen and campaign manager Dick Wadhams indicated that Allen's maternal grandfather, Felix Lumbroso, an Italian businessman jailed by the Nazis in North Africa, was Jewish. Allen said in the interview he does not know his maternal grandmother's religion.
Because Judaism is traced through the mother, children born to Jewish women are considered Jews. Allen said his mother, who could not be reached for comment, was raised as a Christian -- as was he.
George Allen is not a junior.
You obviously are either.
1) a lefty troll, or
2) just butt ignorant
But thanks for playing.
yeah and his daddy(God rest his soul)the great George Allen prolly had the Redskins over for numerous Virginia Hams on special occasions
How is that awkward?
Lots of Jews don't keep kosher.
and as well we all know(I lived my growing up years in the Clarke County)if you are a Christian there there are two meats for Sunday dinner,, fried chicken and or Virginia Ham
A GWB clone. Leaders must be able to (1) think clearly, and (2) communicate their thoughts clearly. We need a change, not a repeat.
Why? What difference does it make one way or the other?
Bluntly put, we have a leadership vacuum. We should have been cultivating real leaders starting back when RWR was pres.
"The biggest non-connected blogger in Virginia, who was neck-deep in the m-word stuff, just got slapped down by the Allen campaign."
Who would that be?
There is no "fear" that Allen would get the nomination except from those who want the GOP to win.
He ain't ready for Prime Time it has become painfully obvious even to those of us who like the guy like me.
This was certainly not a "no-win" question. If fact, for most politicians it would have been a complete softball. Allen totally bobbled it. Handling it fine would have been something on the order of, "I'm so glad you asked. Yes, my grandfather was Jewish and our family has always taken great pride in our heritage."
My Sister-In-Law family keeps Kosher. She wants to visit the South, and is always asking me where to go, since I'm from down that way. I just tell her, "You'd starve".
He's way ready for prime time. You, however, are NOT.
A genuine response to a rude question from off hand genealogists working for the Webb campaign sounded legitimate to me but then I'm just the average joe from flyover country.
Sniff, sniff, sniff...
