Excerpts from Hungarian PM Gyurcsany's controversial speech (profanity warning)

BUDAPEST - Hungary's prime minister on Tuesday rejected calls to resign and threatened to crack down on any repeat of anti-government riots that left 150 injured in the worst street violence here since the fall of Communism.

Following are excerpts from Ferenc Gyurcsany's controversial May 26 speech to members of his Socialist party, leaked to the press over the weekend, which set off the protests:

"I almost died, that for one year and a half I had to pretend like we were governing. Instead, we lied morning, night and evening. I don't want to do it any more. Either we do it, and you have a man for it, or do it with another man.

"We do not have a lot of choice. We don't have any because we screwed up. Not a little, big time. No country in Europe has committed blunders like we have. There is an explanation for this. We obviously lied our way through the past one-and-a-half to two years. It was obvious that what we said was not true. We surpassed the capacities of the country by so much, that we could not imagine this before that the coalition of the Hungarian Socialist Party and liberals could do this. And meanwhile we did nothing for the past four years. Nothing. You cannot tell me one significant government action of which we could be proud...Nothing.

"Are we going to do something big? Are we going to say, damn it, that a couple of people came along, who were brave enough to do it and did not give a shit about their expense accounts, fuck it. A few people came along, who did not give a shit whether they won the local elections or not, but instead did it, (and showed) there is something else to this fucking country. That they understood, that it is worth being a politician in the beginning of the 21st century, to create another world. Only for this.

"That is not reform (to expect) that others should change. That is not reform that we stand up and say the mantra to the people. Are we willing to re-evaluate all that we thought and did, that is reform. Compared to this, the task of the first few months is the (economic) correction, that is simply under duress, I must admit. You are mistaken if you think you have a choice. We don't. I don't either. The only choice we may have is whether we try to influence events, or whether it will just collapse the hell on us.

"I think it is possible to do it. I think there will be conflicts kids, yes, there will be. There will be protests. One can protest in front of parliament. Sooner or later they will get bored and go home.

"We have to start. We have to know what we want to do. The first few years will be horrendous, of course. It's irrelevant that 20 percent of the population will vote for us...But what if we lost our popularity not by screwing around with each other but because we did big social (reforms)? And it's not a problem if we temporarily lost the support of society. We'll get it back later. Because they (the people) will come to understand it.

I bet that's what Slick Willy said everyday he was in the White House. But at least he wasn't dumb enough to tape it.
