I had no idea Islam was a major influence in Thailand.

Thailand is more than 90% Buddhist. 95% of the Muslims are in the six Southern provinces adjacent to Muslim Malaysia who somewhat resent being a part of the Thai central government (although they have been so for more than 200 years)...Jamal Islamiya and several Al Qaeda groups are quite powerful down there, however...Thaksin has been trying to crack down on the rebels but some of the Army Muslims have been sabotaging the deal. Now apparently, unable to win at the polls, they are are trying to use the military. Whether the King, who has considerable political power, will permit this is unknown.

With getting near 10% of the population, and concentrated in one area, this sounds like the tipping point for moslem attempt at take-over.

That's what I thought. So this "coup" should be a non starter.
