A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN...?

~ All the girls had ugly gym uniforms?

~It took five minutes for the TV warm up?

~ Nearly everyone's Mom was at home when the kids got home from school?

~ Nobody (you knew) owned a purebred dog?

~ When a quarter was a decent allowance?

~ You'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny?

~ Your Mom wore nylons that came in two pieces?

~ All your male teachers wore neckties and female teachers had their hair done every day and wore high heels?

~ You got your windshield cleaned, oil checked, and gas pumped, without asking, all for free, every time? And you didn't pay for air? And, you got trading stamps to boot?

~ Laundry detergent had free glasses, dishes or towels hidden inside the box?

~ It was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant with your parents?

~ They threatened to keep kids back a grade if they failed. . and they did?

~ When a 57 Chevy was everyone's dream car...to cruise, peel out, lay rubber or watch submarine races, and people went steady?

~ No one ever asked where the car keys were because they were always in the car, in the ignition, and the doors were never locked?

~ Lying on your back in the grass with your friends and saying things like, "That cloud looks like a ..
~and playing baseball with no adults to help kids with the rules of the game?

~ Stuff from the store came without safety caps and hermetic seals because no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger?

~ And with all our progress, don't you just wish, just once, you could slip back in time and savor the slower pace, and share it with the children of today?

~ When being sent to the principal's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited the student at home? Basically we were in fear for our lives, but it wasn't because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc. Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! But we survived because their love was greater than the threat.

~ Can you still remember Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, Laurel and Hardy, Howdy Dowdy and the Peanut Gallery, the Lone Ranger, The Shadow Knows, Nellie Bell, Roy and Dale, Trigger and Buttermilk.

~As well as summers filled with bike rides, baseball games, Hula Hoops, pogo sticks, SPUD, double dog dares, bowling and visits to th e pool, and eating Kool-Aid powder with sugar.

~ Didn't that feel good, just to go back and say, "Yeah, I remember that"?
~ Necco wafers?

How many of these do you remember?

~ Candy cigarettes

~ Wax Coke-shaped bottles with colored sugar water inside

~ Soda pop machines that dispensed glass bottles

~ Coffee shops with tableside jukeboxes

~ Blackjack, Clove and Teaberry chewing gum

~ Home milk delivery in glass bottles with cardboard stoppers

~ Newsreels before the movie

~ P.F. Fliers

~ telephone numbers with a word prefix...( Hillcrest 4-601).

~ Party lines

~ Peashooters

~ Howdy Dowdy

~ 45 RPM records

~ Green Stamps

~ Hi-Fi's

~ Metal ice cubes trays with levers

~ Mimeograph paper

~ Beanie and Cecil

~ Roller-skate keys

~ Cork pop guns

~ Drive ins

~ Studebakers or Nash Ramblers

~ Washtub wringers

~ The Fuller Brush Man

~ Reel-To-Reel tape recorders

~ Tinkertoys

~ Erector Sets

~ The Fort Apache Play Set

~ Lincoln Logs

~ 15 cent McDonald hamburgers

~ 5 cent packs of baseball cards - with that awful pink slab of bubble gum

~ White out
~ Penny candy

~ 35 cent a gallon gasoline

~ Jiffy Pop popcorn

Do you remember a time when...

~ Decisions were made by going "eeny-meeny-miney-moe"?
~ Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, "Do Over!"?
~ "Race issue" meant arguing about who ran the fastest?
~ Catching the fireflies could happily occupy an entire evening?
~ It wasn't odd to have two or three "Best Friends"?

~ The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was "cooties"?
~ Having a weapon in school meant being caught with a slingshot?
~ A foot of snow was a dream come true?
~ Eating paste in school was “cool”?

~ Saturday morning cartoons weren't 30-minute commercials for action figures?
"Oly-oly-oxen-free" made perfect sense?
~ Spinning around, getting dizzy, and falling down was cause for giggles?

~ The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team?
~ War was a card game?
~ Baseball cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle?
~ Taking drugs meant orange-flavored chewable aspirin?
~ Water balloons were the ultimate weapon?

If you can remember most or all of these, then you have lived!!!!!!!
and for a VERY long time

you have fun memories also G..

In the neighborhood we grew up in, we would play outdoors until after dark. There were dozens of children in the one block areas.. (babyboomers we were) We would play In the roads (that weren't too busy) SPUD, sandlot baseball, red rover, tug of war.

Our parents might be sitting in front yards chatting with other neighbors, but they would then begin to call (some had bells) etc & one by one we would go in, exhausted, dirty & happy.

I just emailed my brohter to check out the thread. He probably cringes (if he ever looks) at the things I post. I have one GOOD PIX.. well, actually have hundreds.. but most aren't worked up for posting.. maybe tomorrow.

I do need to reboot. I have a gig of RAM but still find when I do a lot of graphic work, things get sluggish

Immortality Breakthrough

READ: Psalm 90

I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. —John 14:3 Ray Kurzweil is a remarkable scientist and inventor. In a book he coauthored, titled Fantastic Voyage: Live Long Enough To Live Forever, he contends that science and technology hold the key to immortality. Kurzweil lives on a strict diet enhanced with a regimen of supplements, fully convinced that he will be alive when the immortality breakthrough happens. He is not a crackpot but a respected member of the business community.

In contrast to this optimism about what science can do stands the realism of Moses. “The days of our lives are seventy years; and if by reason of strength they are eighty years, yet their boast is only labor and sorrow” (Ps. 90:10). At best we live a few decades, and then we are gone like grass in the park.

Far better to trust ourselves to Jesus, who promises to join us to the timeless life of God. He told His disciples, “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:3).

Christ’s followers live in the assurance that when the sun has burned its last and the stars have tumbled from the sky, we shall be alive. We anticipate a life greater than anything we could imagine in our wildest dreams. Haddon W. Robinson

I can't believe you remember ALL these things. What a great trip back in nostalgia. OK, I'll add one: how about the "Model 'A' Ford" where the gas tank was right up IN FRONT of you and the filler opening was right in front of you by the windshield. (I "consult" to a big vehicle remarketing firm and last week a Model A was on the block w/a minimum asking price of $20,00...the original price was about $200+.>>> how things change!).

I remember:

When there was no Internet.

Rotary phones and their
wonderful dialing motion and sound.

When postage stamps were only a nickle.

Public phone calls were just a dime.

You could go to the movies and
for one low price see back to back movies.

Drive in Theaters.

8 Track tape players.

78 & 45 records.

Slide projectors.

Reel to reel projectors.

When T V only had 4 channels.

Rabbit ear antennas.

Pre cable.

Pre V C R.

When neighbors were more neighborly.

And strangers harming people was rare.

When stores were closed on Sundays.

I remember when God's will and way won out in society on a

grand scale and a regular basis.

When personal;at home; fireworks were legal.

Before wearing helmets and seat belts became laws.

The Steeler Football team of the 1970's.

I'm not a momo...nononeverneverunhunhunh!
But I remember my massive crush on Donny Osmond.
Never missed the Donny & Marie Variety Hour...
Friday nights,8pm ABC 1976-79!
