Time For Us To Go
The Washington Monthly ^ | October 2006 | Various

Posted on 09/18/2006 12:12:52 PM PDT by hripka

With Republicans controlling Congress and the White House, conservatives these days ought to be happy, but most aren’t. They see expanding government, runaway spending, Middle East entanglements, and government corruption, and they wonder why, exactly, the country should be grateful for Republican dominance. Some accuse Bush and the Republicans today of not being true conservatives. Others see a grab bag of stated policies and wonder how they cohere. Everyone thinks something’s got to change.

Now seven prominent conservatives dare to speak the unspeakable: They hope the Republicans lose in 2006. Well, let’s be diplomatic and say they’d prefer divided government—soon. (Perhaps that formulation will fool Dennis Hastert.) Of course, all of them wish for the long-term health of conservatism, and most are loyal to the GOP. What they also believe, however, is that even if a Speaker Pelosi looms in the wings, sometimes the best remedy for a party gone astray is to give it a session in the time-out chair.

We lose and they will make sure we never win again. You think CFR is bad, they will make that look tame.

LOL

I'm tired of voting and supporting GOP VERY CONSISTENTLY for 20 years and continually winding up voting for the lesser of two evils.

Why can't the GOP stand behind conservatives in primaries, and govern in a conservative manner when in power.

When Republicans govern conservatively, they win. When they act like Democrats (wage and price controls, third rate burglaries, runaway domestic spending, radically expanding social programs, increasing intrusions into private lives via the DEA and BATF), they lose.

I wish all the Rockefeller Moderates would get that through their thick, socialistic skulls.

Effing morons! They would throw out elected officials who agree with us 75% to 90% of the time and let in those who not only never agree with conservatives, but also would use their power to prevent us from ever winning again.

Desperation is setting in when they actually tell us we're better off out of power.

Yeah. Gridlock might bring government to a halt. Horrors!

I wonder how many people who will post on this thread are actually on the GOP payroll.

Gridlock? No. Liberal Democrats in control of our country and willing to do anything to avoid losing power again. If you like this scenario, you belong on DU, not FR.

I'm confused, which isn't unusual J

What does this have to do with the article:

Let's quit while we're behind By Christopher Buckley

Bring on Pelosi By Bruce Bartlett

And we thought Clinton had no self-control By Joe Scarborough

Give divided government a chance By William A. Niskanen

Restrain this White House By Bruce Fein

Liberal Democrats in control of our country

Nice straw man!

We're talking Democrat House. Divided government.

Straw man? If the thought of Speaker of the House Nancy D'Allesandro Pelosi does not scare the crap out of you, I am quite sure you are not conservative.

OK, accepting your premise of "divided government," how much power do you want the liberal Democrats to have? If they get the House, they can impeach the President for trying to protect the country from another 9/11. If they get the Senate, you can forget conservative judges getting out of the Judiciary Committee. Well?

Unfortunately, some of the "effing morons" that you refer to and right HERE among us on this forum. This is not a divide and conquer tactic from the Left Wing or their minions in the mainstream media....this talk is TRULY coming from many of the Conservatives on this forum, and even from a host of otherwise admirable right wingers. Sadly, some on our side have taken to the "circular firing squad" method of enforcing their version of ideological purity.

Personally, Rebel Banker, I completely agree with YOU when you said, "Effing morons! They would throw out elected officials who agree with us 75% to 90% of the time and let in those who not only never agree with conservatives, but also would use their power to prevent us from ever winning again."

Obviously you are 100% correct, but there is no doubt that the "good guys" are in deep trouble because a not insignificant number of the people on this forum agree with the ludicrous notion that true conservatives are best served by either losing, or sitting out, the 2006 election.

I'll tell them why in one word.

Islam.

If we were to truly embrace the "lose in order to win" strategy I'd suggest everyone brush up on their Arabic.

Shalom.

If Speaker Pelosi and key House Chairmen like John Conyers don't scare the living hell out of you, then you really need to rethink some of your politics. It is not a Straw Man...it would be a PAINFUL reality to swallow.

Thank you for your support and sorry about the mini-rant. I get VERY frustrated with the folks who can not seem to grasp the concept that we as conservatives can work toward moving the Republican Party to our positions, but have no influence on the Democrat Party. As long as the GOP is in power, we can try to get more influence, but if the Dems get it back, we will have none.

I think my tagline is a tolerable summation...

Yeah. Gridlock might bring government to a halt. Horrors!

Actually, I like it when gridlock brings government to a halt. I was really upset when Clinton and Congress got into that tiff and shut government down.

The press kept asking who was to blame. I thought they should be asking who gets the credit.

Shalom.

Rebel Banker,

No need to apologize. Your "colorful metaphor" was right on target in my opinion. Perhaps a bit "unartful" but definitely accurate...LOL
