When the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to consumers on Thursday about E. coli contamination in bagged spinach, it didn't come as a surprise to Michael Doyle. So far, about 100 people have fallen ill and one death has been connected to the dangerous E. coli 0157:H7 bacterial infection, and the director of food safety at the University of Georgia says that outbreaks like this one will only continue if produce manufacturers don't change their practices.

hummmmm could this be terrorist related? I have wondered about eating bagged lettuce as well.
Sounds like it is 'organic' in nature. These organic produce operations like to use cow manure for fertilizer instead of synthetic fertilizers. More unintended bad consequences from the left if you ask me.
It wouldn't take much to crop dust with contaminants, would it? I've never cared for organic this or that, but I will miss spinach salad.
The feds are warning us about "all" bag and fresh spinach. So I am supposed to worry about spinach that was bagged in a plant in Oregon when the problem is south of me here in California? I sense a bit of hysteria going on here.
Anyway, it doesn't matter to me. I have a greenhouse and I am growing most of the greens and vegies that I eat. That way I know what's on the plants and what they put into me.
"It wouldn't take much to crop dust with contaminants, would it? I've never cared for organic this or that, but I will miss spinach salad."
Not sure if it can be eliminated once it has entered the 'bloodstream' of the growing plant. I will miss spinach salad as well. Hopefully they can come up with better practices to solve the problem.
Thanks for reminding me about the bloodstream of the plant. I saw that too, but I guess I didn't want hold that thought.
My post was not clear enough. I was alluding to the possibility that a foe could dust using contaminants [E. coli] and if may be effective, particularly if the ground has been irrigated first. It sound pretty 'conspiracy theory' but OTOH given 9-11 attackers preference for attacking by air...you never know.
One of my insured's is a produce wholesaler that delivered the produce that caused people to get hepatitus at the O'Charleys. They bought it in Mexico and it is now known the Mexican farmers sometimes use human manure to fertilize their crops (illegal to do in America). I have now become paranoid about my produce. WASH YOUR VEGETABLES AND FRUIT FOLKS.
This only confirms my distrust of bagged spinach and greens. I'm not saying that loose spinach is completely safe. But I'd use it any time over the bagged variety. It sounds as if the pocessing just spreads any contamination around.

LOL, I didn't read your post clearly either. You said contaminate not decontaminate. My bad. I would not put anything past our enemy.
The LEFT still doesn't believe that"The Road To Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions"RESULTS don't count (to them)!!!!!!!!!!!
Brutus has his revenge.
I was wondering if the "organic process" contributed to the spread. Haven't read much about that aspect - may be too policitally incorrect.

YUCK!! Why do we allow them to sell the stuff here if their agricultural practices are unsafe? No more mexico produce for me...GROSS!! LOL
There's no guarantee that field packed veggies are picked with clean hands. There's two portajohns and no running water in the fields near by parent's place. About 30 mexicans pick and pack tomatos that are sold directly to the grocery stores.
"....may be too policitally incorrect"
All the more reason to bring it up...lol!
