RIVERSIDE — An event billed as an educational forum about federal immigration law quickly became a rally against illegal immigration yesterday as speakers decried an “invasion” of illegal immigrants and warned a second Civil War is brewing.
Addressing a supportive crowd of about 30 at Spring Garden Park, speakers from the Federation for American Immigration Reform, Connecticut Citizens for Immigration Control and the Buchanan 2008 Campaign — a grassroots effort to convince political pundit Pat Buchanan, who famously called for a wall to be built along the U.S.-Mexico border, to run for president — blamed illegal immigrants for driving down wages and sucking up welfare.
The angriest rhetoric came from Miguel Cruz and Carmen Morales of You Don't Speak for Me, American Hispanic Voices Speaking Out Against Illegal Immigration, who condemned illegal immigrants for ineffectual schools, debasing U.S. culture and bastardizing the English language.
“Go back to where you came from,” Morales said. “You are not citizens. You don't belong here.”
Standing in a pavilion draped with American flags, Cruz was even more strident, calling illegal immigrants murderers, rapists, child molesters, gang members and illiterate carriers of disease.
To those who disagree, Cruz said, “You are racists; you are traitors because you hate America. To some of us, it smells like there is a civil war approaching and this American is ready.”
“I haven't seen such hate since the March on Selma,” said Dave Verduin, the president of a coalition of local business owners and landlords opposed to Riverside's recently enacted anti-illegal immigrant ordinance. “I came because they said it would be a non-partisan forum. This is misinformation; they said it would be educational.”
What's so hard to understand? They take a position that is the liberal one, or act in such a way so as to undermine the conservative agenda, why should you be surprised when conservatives oppose them? Where do you get the strange notion that attacking liberals or liberalism gives you dirty hands? I thought that's what FR was for...to promote constitutional conservatism and to attack and defeat liberalism in all of its insidious forms. Have I been mistaken all of these years?
I think attacking ideas with evidence, logic, persuasiveness is very different from attacking personhood with haughtiness and self-righteousness as fiercely pharisaical attitudes.
I've been guilty of the latter. I'm glad Jim and Angel-Gal and others have helped me succeed more at distancing myself from such. I can feel very justified in such attacks. But it's instantly or quickly a p*ssing contest. And the smell is not attractive.
It doesn't matter how "objectively righteous" my position might be. It doesn't even matter how truly conservative vs liberal my opponent might be. Stooping to such person-hood hostilities soils my nest and tarnishes my position as much as it flings poopy all over the other person.
We can be better than that. Our cause deserves our being better than that. We can be forceful, energetic, passionate, effective without going for the person-hood jugular of the other person.
The aroma is better. The after taste is better. The effect is better.
And, we don't come off sounding and looking like the rabid dog idiots at DU.

Buchanan has never recognized the danger of the Islamofascists. He could not even support driving Saddam out of Kuwait. The man is laughable.

Correction, Travis McGee never posted that he wanted a civil war. He did post that major issues that divide the country can lead to a civil war. He also posted that many believe there might or will be a civil war fueled by illegal immigration.
Travis was not a promoter of civil war. There is a big difference in discussing the possibility and promoting.
That doesn't explain away your attacks on other conservatives, who don't think like you and then you mislabel those who don't completely think, talk or walk in the same manner you do as "RINO's".
Show me one example of when I've ever "attacked" a conservative. Posters promoting liberalism, even if they deceptively call themselves conservatives, don't count.

Everything is going great...far, far better then the buchanan 2008 campaign.
I've read his first book. He describes his "dirty civil war" with the sort of relish that people like Ted Bundy and David Berkowitz have descibed their own deeds in interviews with FBI profilers. Going solely by what he's written, I'd have to conclude that he really does want it to happen.
