[Forgive my poor translation.] This looks like an overturn, and that the Social Democrats will be replaced. High time! The main issue was intolerable taxes.

Wow, that's good news. From what I've read about him, Fredrik Reinfeldt sounds like a good man for the job and a good ally for the US.

If everyone in the world hates the US and George Bush, why does one country after another keep voting in more conservative governments?

We hope so, but are they really pro-USA and pro-WOT? Please, tell us more (if you know). Thanks.

Swedish centre-right set for election win-exit polls
17/09/2006 18:24

By Patrick Lannin and Sarah Edmonds

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - A centre-right alliance was on course to win a parliamentary election in Sweden on Sunday, ending 12 years of Social Democrat rule with pledges to trim the welfare state, television exit polls showed.

An exit poll by channel TV4 after voting ended predicted a four-party alliance under Moderate Party leader Fredrik Reinfeldt would win 48.6 percent of votes. It put a bloc led by Prime Minister Goran Persson’s Social Democrats on 46.7 percent.

A second exit poll by national public broadcaster SVT put the centre-right on 49.7 percent of votes, and the Social Democrats’ bloc on 45.6 percent.

The exit polls sent a warning to governments of other European countries facing the need of welfare reforms because of ageing populations and creaking pension and healthcare systems.

The centre-right alliance vowed to trim but not radically overhaul the welfare system.

"I think we felt we did right (in the election campaign) and it is fantastic to get this result," said Beatrice Ask, a parliamentary deputy from the Moderate Party.

The Social Democrats have been in power since 1994 and held sway for six of the last seven decades.

Despite Sweden’s strong performance under the Social Democrats, opinion polls before the vote had shown many voters favoured change in the Scandinavian country of just over 9 million people, which is a member of the European Union.

The Election Commission was expected to release a preliminary result by around 2030 GMT.

"We hope so, but are they really pro-USA and pro-WOT? Please, tell us more (if you know). Thanks."

A majority of Moderate swedish MP's supported GWB in the last presidential election.

The Moderates have also done a good job in defending the US strategy in the WOT area and have furthermore attacked leftist/feminist swedish idiots like Schyman who - among many other stupid things - have provoked a lot of swedes by saying that the US "has itself to blame for the WTC attack".

Still, I guess a lot of republicans would deem the Moderates to be a much more liberal party than the US Republicans upon closer scrutiny, but at the same time it ought to be acknowledged that Sweden already has a very corporate and investment friendly political policy and that with a government lead by the Moderates, Sweden will be even more capitalist and even more successful than it is today.

Thank you. Are you sure they have won? The data are turning wrong now.

Amazing that a party overthrowing socialists is referred to as "moderate." I think they were called angry white guys throwing a temper tantrum by our media in 1994.

Swedish "moderates" are the same as American Democrats.

No, Swedish Moderates are more pro-WOT and more corporate friendly. However, with Moderaterna in charge, Sweden will continue to tax income as well as consumption heavily (while corporate taxes will be even lower than they are today - already they're lower in Sweden than the US).

Could you help us to read the data? Why the left has taken lead, in this moment?

"Thank you. Are you sure they have won? The data are turning wrong now."

They haven't won yet, but it's unlikely that the conservative-cetre alliance will lose.
Anyhow, even if the situation would turn out all antipode, it'll still result in a major triumph for conservatism in Sweden, as the support for Moderaterna will have doubled compared to last election and a lot of people will have proved to give up belief in the ruling Social Democrats.

Looks like we are in for a thriller.

Might not even be decided tonight.

Crossing fingers. It could be tough to knock a party like the SDP out of power, since they've been in charge so damn long.

The centre-right alliance vowed to trim but not radically overhaul the welfare system.

In other words, compassionate conservatism. Hope you guys have better luck with that than we have.

It's one thing to hate the US President and another thing to vote for idiots. There is a clear right and wrong in the current world struggle and most people can see that easily for themselves.

In the last year it appears that much of Europe has woken up. I have hope for Europe for the first time in many years.

Alliance's strongest region is Stockholm and they are behind the rest of Sweden in counting the votes. I re-calculated the results adjusting for that and I get a 0.2% win for Alliance. It's going to be very close.
