I love the Rockies, but Colorado has too many ex-hippies, including my sister and her husband. Almost as bad as SF or the "great Northwest" of Evergreen college (where my nephew teaches). I prefer the rockies either north of Colorado in Wyoming, or south in New Mexico. I have family in both of those states, as well.
Dubois, Wyoming, is truly spectacular and Cody, at the eastern entrance to Yellowstone, seems like a really comfortable place to be. Albuquerque up to Santa Fe and Taos is also amazing. Taos and Santa Fe have their share of fru fru types, as well, but just hang out with the tribes for awhile and you get grounded again real fast. And Sky City at Acoma, in the dead of winter, is perhaps one of the most beautiful (and cold) places on the planet.
