GOP election tactic: Scare voters with Pelosi - Party chairman says she would 'weaken America'
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 9/16/6 | Edward Epstein

Washington -- The Republican national chairman said Friday that his party's campaign to keep control of the House in the November midterm elections will focus on what he called the dangers to America if San Francisco's Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi becomes speaker of the House.

It's a strategy Republicans already are deploying across the country in some of the hardest-fought contests. But analysts, pointing toward the political problems President Bush has created for his party, question whether the tactic will work.

A Democratic-controlled House led by Pelosi, derided by Republicans as a "San Francisco liberal'' since she was elected House minority leader in November 2002, would approve policies that would "weaken America,'' Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman said at a breakfast with reporters.

Pelosi's potential role as House speaker is a legitimate issue in House races because voters "are going to (ask) what would a 'Speaker Pelosi' mean in terms of policy?'' Mehlman said.

Republicans have raised the specter of a "Speaker Pelosi'' as they try to prevent the Democrats from picking up the 15 seats the minority party needs to win control of the House for the first time since 1994. The Republicans admit 2006 has shaped up as a tough year, with the party weighed down by Bush's low approval ratings, the war in Iraq, high gasoline prices and economic unease.

In Indiana, Republican state Chairman Murray Clark on Tuesday linked Pelosi with three Indiana Democratic House challengers as the trio prepared to visit Washington for a party fund-raiser.

"She doesn't represent Hoosier values on the war on terror, tax cuts or border security,'' Clark said in a statement. "Don't forget that a vote for the Democrats is a vote to give San Francisco more power."

Umm, isn't she actually scary? How is this a "tactic?"

Interesting how publicizing what Dems and liberals like Pelosi actually say is attacked, yet making up allegations and trying to convince people that Republicans have some secret agenda to start wars for oil and are racist is pretty much ignored.

....attacks on Pelosi could be effective, said William Blomquist, a political scientist at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis. (snip) He said that for such voters "San Francisco liberal'' is a powerful code. "It carries all kinds of connotations. It means a nonreligious, pro-gay, weak on defense, tree-hugging flake of some sort.''

Yeah, that pretty much nails it.

By the way, notice the difference between Republican campaign tactics and Democrat tactics? In the past, the rats have created boogeymen by smearing people like Newt Gingrich and Tom DeLay, whereas the Republicans only need to present the real Nancy Pelosi.

Personally, I will never forget the TV ads where the rats took a Gingrich soundbite about Medicare totally out of context in order to scare senior citizens. It was almost as bad as the "black churches will burn" ads the rats ran in St. Louis, or the "lynch" ads they ran in Texas and elsewhere.

It's not a scare tactic, it's pointing out the obvious. Liberals cannot be trusted with our security (or anything else)

I am astounded that this election is in doubt. How stupid have the American people become, that Pelosi is close to attaining such power in our nation? How unbelievably stupid?

and that idiot wench scares the doo-doo out of me if she were third in line to the Presidency.

Change the wording a little bit and that becomes the bumper sticker for the Republicans: "Should this be the first woman President? She's next in line..."

So now telling the truth about a Demo is a "Scare tactic"?

How about the Leftist acctually address the point raised instead of desperately trying to divert attention from the facts by hurling phony accusations?

Funny how Junk Journalists will alway ask critical questions of Republicans but NEVER of any Democrat Politican.

If it were the other way around, every Junk Journalist in the world would be screaming in her face "Critics say you are bad for American because...."
