The Pope’s Words (gigabarf alert!)
NY Slimes ^ | September 16, 2006 | Megameathead Editorial

Posted on 09/16/2006 12:01:58 PM PDT by neverdem

There is more than enough religious anger in the world. So it is particularly disturbing that Pope Benedict XVI has insulted Muslims, quoting a 14th-century description of Islam as “evil and inhuman.”

In the most provocative part of a speech this week on “faith and reason,” the pontiff recounted a conversation between an “erudite” Byzantine Christian emperor and a “learned” Muslim Persian circa 1391. The pope quoted the emperor saying, “Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.”

Muslim leaders the world over have demanded apologies and threatened to recall their ambassadors from the Vatican, warning that the pope’s words dangerously reinforce a false and biased view of Islam. For many Muslims, holy war — jihad — is a spiritual struggle, and not a call to violence. And they denounce its perversion by extremists, who use jihad to justify murder and terrorism.

The Vatican issued a statement saying that Benedict meant no offense and in fact desired dialogue. But this is not the first time the pope has fomented discord between Christians and Muslims.

In 2004 when he was still the Vatican’s top theologian, he spoke out against Turkey’s joining the European Union, because Turkey, as a Muslim country was “in permanent contrast to Europe.”

--snip--

The world listens carefully to the words of any pope. And it is tragic and dangerous when one sows pain, either deliberately or carelessly. He needs to offer a deep and persuasive apology, demonstrating that words can also heal.

"He was also stating that religion deserved a place at the table of academic thought, and must not be dismissed by definition of the academics."

The Pope made the mistake of trusting the radical media to be truthful.

If the WOT has done nothing else it has alerted us to the fact there is an enemy far greater than any Islamic extremist.

The anti-religious movement is in full force in the media.

I went to the NYTimes home page and found contact information for all the editors.

I asked each one of them why they're not upset by the bombing of five Christian churches.

No wonder their circulation is plummeting.

I sort of guessed that's what it was.

It was a fine rant though, and I'm glad I could provide a hook to hang it on.

I know you've made a number of excellent posts on these threads, and thanks for that.

Thanks.

I hope it filters into some of the other news media.

I listened carefully...and I liked what I heard. God bless this Pope. Unlike the last one, who was tough against Commies but soft against Islamfascists, Benedict is not afraid to tell the truth about the new evil which threatens the world.

... every time a westerner tries to appease an Islamofascist, the Muslim's belief that he's right and the west is wrong is just strengthened.

Every time an organization or person who purports to be intelligent fails to grasp this point, I have only contempt for their intellect. At the same time, I want to scream or cry at the damage they are doing to the future stability of all of us. Just because jihadists do not mind living in squalor, does not mean that we all want to join them.

If I remember correctly, the un-PC fellow the Pope was quoting may have been out of sorts due to the fact that MUSLIMS WERE ATTACKING HIS LAND, AND LAID SEIGE TO THE CITY!

And when the city finally fell, the muslims sought to spiritually purify themselves by beheading the inhabitants.

Jihad! does not mean quiet meditation, or seeking to more fully obey God. If it did, the NY Times would be opposed to it.

"Jihad" can mean many things from an individual's internal spiritual struggle to open warfare. Just as "resistance" or "opposition" can mean many things.

If you Google "meaning jihad" you will find a lot of Islamic sites, all assuring us that jihad does not mean war. But look at what they do, not what they say.

There is a link to the editorial editor. I just put in my $0.02 worth.

They have an editorial board.

The editorials are written by individual board members in consultation with their colleagues, and are edited by Ms. Collins and Mr. Rosenthal.

I would love to know who penned that garbage.

It no longer is an offence just to say something Moslems don't like
it now is an offence to quote someone who may have lived 500 years ago
who said something Moslems don't like.

And even the New York Times will denounce you for it.

Persia, Byzentium, Egypt, and others were leaders in the world until they were conquered by Islam. They all were foremost among the civilizations of earlier times. But once Islam took hold, they have regressed to the margin between second and third world countries. Their main gross domestic product is a bunch of bearded street screamers. They need to modernize if they want to get some respect. Their pitiful condition is not the Pope's fault. Christian Russia quickly becomes more prosperous with its lately discovered energy resources. The Islamic countries with great energy resources can't do a thing with them because they are paralyzed by Islamic culture.

And we are all stocked up on those... Free markets of liquid gold worth billions seems to be beyond the grasp of these carpet merchants.

Exactly. The Muslims entered the city and killed everyone in it, men, women, and children. I've been trying to find the story posted somewhere, but I forget the name of the bloodthirsty bastard who was responsible.

The situation was somewhat ironic, because as I recall the Persians had earlier been so busy fighting the Byzantines, they forgot to notice where the real threat came from.

If you Google the words "Muslim conquest of [fill in the blank], you find too many entries to make the search easy. Muslim conquest of Spain. Muslim conquest of India. Muslim conquest of Buddhist China. Muslim conquest of . . . almost any place you care to name.
