In 2000, federal authorities indicted two dozen leaders of Los Angeles' notorious 18th Street gang in a move prosecutors said would "cut off the head" of the group.
But the head grew back — despite more arrests and several gang injunctions designed to prevent members from congregating.
So this week, when federal prosecutors indicted 18 gang leaders for allegedly running a sophisticated drug operation west of downtown, the grand pronouncements about the gang's impending death were conspicuously absent.
Instead, Assistant U.S. Atty. Bruce Riordan said he expected a period of chaos within the gang as younger members vie for power. He expects new members to eventually rise to leadership positions and attempt to restart the drug trade.
"It is going to severely disorientate and disrupt this criminal organization for two or three years," said Riordan, who has spent a decade prosecuting the gang. "It is like 'The Sopranos' when [mob boss] Tony got shot and was out of action. They found out in reality that it's a lot harder to be the boss."
In Los Angeles, gang membership and gang-related crimes are down over the last five years, according to estimates from the Los Angeles Police Department and the city attorney's office.

Regardless, Various spots in LA are beyond repair. It's like being in TJ. Slowly but surely LA is being taken back by Mexico.
No mention of The Avenues, a vicious Hispanic street gang.
They're also likely to get a ton of free publicity next year or so. Movie director Tony Scott is doing a remake of the 70's film "The Warriors", and is going to set it in modern day Los Angeles using actual LA gang bangers in many of the roles.
"It will be the Bloods, the Crips, the Vietnamese, the 18th Street [Gang], all the boys. It will be all the major gangs in Los Angeles, and we're going to try to get them to stand on the Long Beach Bridge."
Why didn't they crackdown 10 or 20 years ago? Because they didn't need to sell open borders.
Would now be a good time to pass the word that the LA gangs have all been talking trash about the Prophet Muhammad? Some say they'll be on that bridge tossing Korans into the ocean. It's too bad no one with a few blocks of C4 wanted to put them under the bridge the night before, because the cops won't be anywhere nearby... ;-)
That's a fantastic idea for a movie (front). Once they're on the bridge, just get a row of bulldozers at each end and play a nice game of "chicken" with the gang-bangers in the middle. Either jump off the bridge or get sandwiched. All the weaponry and "bling bling" will make the jumpers sink like stones. Why doesn't L.A. just grow a pair and "take out the trash" once and for all. Raze the ghetto neighborhoods and relocate the decent people to better areas, then sell the land to developers to offset the costs.
Exactly. Living in SoCal, I would love to see the guv send the National Guard to clean all of them up by declaring them DOMESTIC TERRORISTS. Not one of them is worth trying to negotiate with. They actually outgun the police. Either destroy them or forcibly enlist them into a special forces group led by Marines and put them in combat in the Gulf. Under strict supervision that they must shoot forward. LOL. Can you imagine the ethnic troops that would actually be turned into good citizens, or soldiers, or more Al Capones? Well, it was just a suggestion.
We Marines don't want gangsta punk criminals in the Corps.
And don't hold your breath expecting RINOld to do anything.
We'll have to wait 'til 2010 to elect to true blue conservative, Tom McClintock to clean up the mess left by liberals...but what else is new. We've been cleaning up their messes for decades!
The illegals including the incarcerated should ALL be deported...
after we secure the border, BOTH OF THEM.
Why should we be left footing the bill to incarcerate other countries' criminals.
And one more 9/11 type terrorist attack in America and every muslim swinging dick will have to pack up his koran and family and go back to whatever hellhole they originated from.
Our ancestors didn't risk life and limb to come to this country just so a bunch of camel jockeys could come here to terrorize our women and children and make hamburger out of our families.
