THE Muslim world's scathing reaction to Pope Benedict's comments on Islam is the biggest challenge to face the pontiff yet and raises concerns over his security, diplomatic and Church sources said today.
"My personal reaction was: 'This is a striking statement. Was it a rare slip-up?'" one of the sources said about the Pope's speech in Germany last Tuesday.

Tey hysterical recation to any perceived insult is alarming. Sooner or later one of these recations will lead to violance of the sort that provokes reaction.
How DARE they call us Muslims violent! Lets kill something to show our anger!
(No more Olmert! No more Kadima! No more Oslo! )
Sadly, the IRA would be on the side of the Muzzies. They've been training them for years as it is, particularly the Palis in the area of bombmaking skills. The IRA are famed for their expertise in this area, and have been hired by ETA, the PLO and many others to provide tips. They're not Catholic; just good old Muzzie-siding Marxists.
But this is absolutely true, as recently illustrated by the case of the two kidnapped reporters who were forced to give up their faith and convert to Islam, under pain of death. I can't help but think that the Pope must have been steamed by that. The Islamists should be lectured on this point; and I don't hear any apologies from them about it, either.
I guess this guy doesn't really get it. The Holy Father was following the example of Jesus, who went about his life saying the truth with no regard of what would happen to his life. Jesus did not care about the "reaction that this could cause" and neither does the Pope.
I too had the feeling that this recent kidnapping and forced "conversion" had something to do with his remarks. He probably believes that if he just lets it slip by, it's going to become more common, and I think he's right. This was perhaps a preemptive strike. Not that the Muslims will get it or care, I'm afraid.
You may recall, that since the real Danish cartoons were not inflammatory enough, the Muzzie imans who complained about it invented two more.
You see, they assert they do the work of Allat, and are allowed to do any horrible thing in his defense. We serve a holy and virtuous G-d, and must only defend him in holy and virtuous ways.
In Africa, 100,000 people a year convert: From Islam to Christianity, despite the threats of criminal Muslim gangs.
Well, aren't most Turks Mohammedans?
We are not violent and we will kill to prove it.
I just came across an interesting article on this:
http://www.centredaily.com/mld/centredaily/news/15528996.htm
Excerpts:
The speech suggested deep dismay over the current conditions of Christians in the Middle East and the rest of the Muslim world, said John Voll, director of the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University in Washington.
"This reflects the intention of Pope Benedict to distinguish himself from his predecessor on his approach to interfaith dialogue," said Voll. "And by this, it means more reciprocity."
Voll said the pope may increasingly instruct Vatican envoys to stress issues of forced conversions of Christians and limits on Christian rights and worship...
The Rev. Robert Taft, a specialist in Islamic affairs at Rome's Pontifical Oriental Institute, said it was unlikely the pope miscalculated how some Muslims would receive his speech.
"The message he is sending is very, very clear," Taft said. "Violence in the name of faith is never acceptable in any religion and that (the pope) considers it his duty to challenge Islam and anyone else on this."
Yes, very interesting. I certainly don't think the Pope's words were any "accident."
great read, thank you. have you thought of posting it in the religion section of FR?
