Padgett picked to represent GOP on ballot By RENEE BROWN, T-R Staff Writer
State Sen. Joy Padgett will face Dover Law Director Zack Space in the Nov. 7 general election in the race for the 18th District congressional seat.
Voters overwhelmingly chose Padgett to replace embattled Rep. Bob Ney, who announced last month he would not continue his bid for re-election. Ney cited the distraction of intensifying investigation into his dealings with disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
Padgett won in all 16 counties that comprise the 18th District Athens, Belmont, Carroll, Coshocton, Guernsey, Harrison, Hocking, Holmes, Jackson, Knox, Licking, Morgan, Muskingum, Ross, Tuscarawas and Vinton counties.
Unofficial totals showed Padgett with 9,451 votes 66 percent of the 14,246 votes cast. Zanesville financial analyst James B. Harris tallied 2,102 votes, while Holmes County Commissioner Ray Feikert garnered 1,433 votes. Ralph A. Applegate of Columbus received 768 votes and Samuel Jerry Firman of Coshocton received 490 votes.
According to unofficial totals in Tuscarawas County, Padgett garnered 768 of the 1,556 votes cast for a little more than 49 percent of the vote. Harris received 365 votes and Feikert tallied 233 votes. Firman received 42 votes and Applegate garnered 148 votes.
