Cardin vs. Capitalism, Matthews' White-Liberal Guilt Trip

When Ben Cardin, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senator from Maryland, appeared on this afternoon's Hardball, host Chris Matthews played a Cardin TV ad, most of which was taken up by Cardin informing voters that:

"I always try to do what's right, what's in the best interest of Maryland families: taking on the drug companies, the oil companies, the insurance companies."

Let's first note Cardin's daring admission that he tries to do 'what's right.' Controversial stuff. Actually, come to think of the track record of Maryland politicians when it comes to obeying the law, maybe it is a rather maverick position after all.

But moving to the meat of his message, is this what Dems in general and Cardin in particular want to take to the voters as their platform? Vote for us: we'll attack our country's biggest employers and taxpayers. You might call the platform: Cardin vs. Capitalism.

Questioning Cardin, Matthews engaged in an odd bit of liberal white guilt-tripping. Said Matthews:

"You ran against an African-American, a real leader in the country, Kweisi Mfume for the nomination, now here you are again [in the general] running against one of the few African-American possibilities to be a US Senator [Republican Michael Steele]. Does that bother you, because there are so few black members of the United States Senate in history?"

It didn't.

Why should it bother Cardin that he is running against an African-American ? Thats a stupid question. What was he supposed to do? Drop out because Kweasy ,The father of 5 iligitimate children> was running? Damn thats stupid.

Having said that, Cardin sucks I will be voting for Steele, but his race hasnt got anything to do with it. he is more qualified and will do a better job than Cardin.

Chris Mathews is an idiot.

Wasn't Ben Cardin mixed up in the savings & loan mess in Maryland, back in the 80's? It seems to me that he was the one that had some papers sealed, so the public couldn't find out who knew what and when did they know it.

Message from Cardin: if you are a representative of a major American industry that I have not promised to attack, please accept my apologies. If you would bring any such unfortunate lapse to my attention, I will be pleased to include you on my next attack list ;-)

It's a delicious irony that MD Democrats rejected an African-American while MD Republicans chose one.

Cardin is one of the despicable bunch that has gone 0-3 in the last 3 court appellate decisions. They will/have passed any piece of garbage that they think will appeal to their base, Prince Georges Co., Montgomery Co. and Baltimore City. They will do it in spite of the fact that their OWN attorneys tell them it's unconstitutional.

They are in your face, we don't care, we're going to do it anyway and dare anyone to try and stop us.

I htink he was the speaker of the house of delegates when the S&L problems in Maryland came up.

And no, he doesn't deserver the Senate. Nor does Sarbanes's son deserve a seat in the house.

"Wasn't Ben Cardin mixed up in the savings & loan mess in Maryland"

Yea, but Ben has not gone too far to the left in relation to some in this state who may be elected. He has been quietly working for the state and its residents from a "safe" level for many years. Like I said, he was to the right of MANY potential replacements. For that I am grateful.

White Maryland Democrats who voted for Cardin when they could have voted for Kweisi should be full of guilt feelings, and should atone by voting for Steele in the general election.

Benjamin Cardin thinks he is entitled to that seat because he dutifully towed the liberal line in the House. He is not entitled to that seat or anything else. He is everything to despise in the entrenched, upper-crust, liberal establishment. He is bought and paid for. He is more of the same. He is an empty suit. Thus I pray and hope that Michael Steele will win and restore honor to that seat.

I spoke with dued inthe wool democrats and asked them why they supported O'Malley and Cardin, since neither were any good , and they told me just what you said. "It dosnt matter what they have done in the past , they will do as they are told in the future".
