Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Democratic challenger Phil Angelides have agreed to debate each other on Oct. 7 on the campus of California State University, Sacramento.
The Angelides camp lent its approval to the timing on Wednesday, despite misgivings over the format that will feature the candidates sitting at a table answering questions posed to them by a single moderator.
Schwarzenegger's forces said one debate is plenty, and they derided the Angelides campaign for trying to impose 11th-hour conditions on an appearance to which the Democrat had agreed more than two months ago.
The California Broadcasters Association is sponsoring the event in conjunction with Sacramento State. Stan Statham, president and chief executive officer of the broadcasters group, said the format and timing of the debate "will at least get both candidates on the same stage at the same time."
"We're going to make it as conversational and discussion-like as possible, and obviously we'll try to fit in the 60 minutes as many important public policy issues as possible, trying desperately to keep the candidates on topic," said Statham, who will moderate the hourlong exchange between the incumbent and the challenger.
Statham is a registered lobbyist for the broadcasters association as well as a one-time Republican legislator from Redding. He will be the only non-candidate on the debate stage. He said he will select the questions after "reaching out to as many voters as possible." He said he'll move the discussion back and forth between Angelides and Schwarzenegger and be ready to shut them up "when I feel the discussion is becoming redundant or taking up too much of the hour."
"I think we're going to have a lot of fun," Statham said, "a lot of public policy and an oversupply of adrenaline."

Should be pretty boring since they agree on 75-80% of all the issues - the dem's want to raise taxes and fee's and Arnold just wants to raise fee's.
Amazing isn't it, they take our incomes to fund their government then charge us fees for the same.
WHY? Davis didn't debate Simon, did he?
Yep--he did. October 7, 2002
