Poland will send at least 900 troops to bolster the NATO mission in Afghanistan, its defense minister said.

"As of February next year, over 1,000 Polish soldiers are going to be serving in Afghanistan," Radoslaw Sikorski told journalists Wednesday evening in Washington in comments broadcast on Polish television Thursday morning.

As an article in The [London] Times pointed out the other day, it’s always Poland picking up the slack when the US and UK have run out of troops. Some other members need to consider whether or not they are really part of Nato (which I believe still serves a useful purpose – it has for more teeth than the UN).

In my opinion the alliance doesn't serve well for other members like France or Germany. Therefore cooperation between those who really care like: UK, USA and some Eastern Europe countries should be strenghtened (more common tranings, mixed military units etc). Happily all that happens at present in Iraq without official NATO participation.

Rummenigge, I do not hate Germany by any means. But why is Germany not doing more to help out in Afghanistan? Few can disagree that the Taliban are bad sorts.

An Irish bloke down the pub wasn’t happy that they do his job for less wages. Seeing as one presumes he did the same when he came over from Ireland however many years ago, I’m not sure he had much to complain about…

Do you? That would explain your silly comment. May seem strange to you, but I don't - personally. And what strikes me the most is that actually Germany in 2001 agreed to take part in Afghani operation and send nearly 4K troops there. Maybe you are one of the Greens who'd opposed it then? Hell knows.

If I may add a comment to your discussion. You're actually getting the best of Poland's population now. Apart from large group of blue collars -'Polish plumbers' another one were graduate freshmen unable to find a decent job suitable for their skills. As you probably realize some of the people will stay in your country forever, intermarry etc. Like this Irish guy that you've met. It's good shot of European blood into British pot. And a really hard time for Polish headhunting companies. ;)

...and why exactly have you been that surprised by the german actions ?

Was there a time in our lifes where germany didn't do the right thing in terms of foreign politics ?

It's time we stop complaing about our neighbours and use the fall of the iron curtain as a chance to stand together - those who don't understand will be overrun by the chineese while they overtake the mullahs on their attempt...

I guess we even agree in that.

Europes histories dark spots which are delightfully discussed on freep (why talk about chances or possibilities - you would only end up committed...) all in all base on the principle to make ties with your next neighbour because you traditionally hate you neighbour.

Succcess comes from the times where neighbours found common ground (norway and sweden - a long time ago)

so now... go on paint me green or brown if you need too...

The only German action I was suprised with (relevant to this thread) was you demonstrating your sarcasm for Poland sending its troops to Afghanistan. Bearing in mind your being an active FReeper and supposed Americanophile there wasn't any reason for that except for jealousy about current state of USA-Polish relationship most probably.

Was there a time in our lifes where germany didn't do the right thing in terms of foreign politics ?

Spare me... I could mention the War in Iraq or Russian drift continued by Merkel (in the form of Baltic pipe). Of course all these things could be right from your perspective but remember - I am Polish.

Yes, I agree. And that exectly what Poland's been doing. Doing the right things together with others willing to help. BTW But I think you'd agree that being overrun by the Chinese is not really OUR problem. While maybe if you moved to Far East Russia... ;)

Oh, it would be so idyllic. But as you are well aware countries have different backgrounds and goals, sometimes even contradicting interests (like in case of Germany preserving their work market from EU newcomers). And I think it's gonna change unless EU turns into another USSR. You've been there, we've done that. You wouldn't like it either believe me.

so now... go on paint me green or brown if you need too...

No need fot that. Your strange comment already did it.

It is not like that. It is follow me, lead me, or get the hell out of my way. There is no standing together, or making nice, there is no time for that. Action is all that matters. If the rest of Europe does not step up, they will continue to decline. Power is shifting away from Europe, and Europe has brought it on itself. Europe, especially the Western part is declining, so America needs to move on to Eastern Europe and beyond, we have to adapt. Besides Germany has given us a lot of trouble lately, ie Iraq and some with Iran, although Merkel is better, but those are symptoms of the same disease, leftism, that is killing most of Europe. Poland is our best European ally, excepting Britain.

In terms of demography and global influence - you're definitely right. Emerging global powers - China and India.

if you shift your focus that fast it's probably not worth to make an effort to be in it...

Reproduction rates in Eastern Europe became also very low. In addition they have large emigration to Western Europe so they are in danger of demographic collapse in the future.

chineese big cheese is on a visit to mrs. merkel today probably introducing the new icons for environmental protection and copyright - terms formerly not known to these folks...

or he might have forgotten that and demands another 2 billion of production volume to be legally shipped to the harbours of hamburg and bremen.
