No Fear
The American Spectator ^ | 9/14/2006 | Christopher Orlet

If the latest polls are to be trusted, the Democrats will take back the House and will fall just shy of retaking the Senate. If so, they have only the perseverance of the indefatigable insurgents to thank. Certainly an uncharacteristic outbreak of peace and normalcy among the Arab tribes of upper Mesopotamia would send Mr. Bush's popularity soaring, but as long as Sunnis and Shias regularly butcher one another and plant ample bombs on Babylon's byways it promises to be a prosperous fall for the opposition. True, the Democrats will likely benefit from the automatic boost the minority gets in midterm elections, but with the (admittedly major) exception of the Iraq War, the majority of Americans are squarely behind the GOP on all fronts, whether it be immigration policy, the economy, or homeland security.

The Democrats' weakness is that the so-called "security moms" do not trust the likes of Nancy Pelosi and John "cut and run" Murtha on security matters. Indeed, they would prefer to entrust a New Orleans levee commissioner to the task. Time and again Democrats object on principle to every proposed law and security measure put forth by the Bush administration, from rudely questioning bloodthirsty jihadists to eavesdropping on their phone conversations. In the meantime the opposition attempts to color the GOP as desperate and craven fearmongers, eager to keep the masses on edge with wolf cries and wild hysterics over mad Muslim bombers. "With the fifth anniversary of 9/11 and a midterm election coming up, the Bush gang is still trafficking in fear, which is about all they have left," alleges Philip Gailey of the St. Petersburg Times.

If that's the Republican gambit it has been about as successful as the electric car. Personally I see no sign of an alleged GOP fear campaign. Here in...

Poppycock.

The Dems will never recover from the suicidal policy of utter hatred and no agenda on any issues.

These are the same polls and wizards that had us readying ourselves for Presidents Gore and Kerry along with earlier losses in Congress. And that was before the dems went completely nuts. Republicans gain both house and senate...Zoltan has spoken.

Do you mean they gain seats in both? I hope so, but don't see much evidence of that. I'd love to be surprised, and I certainly don't detect this big takeover the democrats are crowing about, but I don't know about R gains.

Just going by what people I work with and run into are saying. It's a total disconnect from what the news/polls are spouting

I don't see this big democrat win the polls are saying, either, and I live in Boston and work in Cambridge. My gut has been right the past few elections but that's no more of use than these dopey polls.

I wonder which polls this far out from the election have been most accurate, and what those polls say.

The mere idea that a notion like this can find traction is astonishing: " the Bush gang is still trafficking in fear".

"Traffiking in Fear!" Wholesale slaughter of innocents ?
Blame the Bush gang? These bloody awowed murderers are figments of Bush's imagination?

Spreading damned lies is an act of terrorism...and it will be rectified in time. ACLU or liberals or not. all perpetrators will be run to ground.

Look, the democrats and old media pundits are stuck in April. Bush has been gaining in the polls for months and all those races that were democrat guarantees have been tightening for months. If trends continue, we will find the GOP up 2-5 points in the polls about everywhere by the election.

That said, we have some really weenie candidates out there and our congressional leadership is about useless.

I expect to see a loss of between 4-7 seats in the congress and to see the Senate break even.

I agree with the "weenie candidates" part, I find myself in the position of having DeWine on my ballot. I hate seeing the party watered down but the repubs might see a Sherod Brown victory as a message that they need to go more liberal than they've already gone.
