House Republican leader John Boehner, just a day after the Sept. 11 anniversary, thrust his party's election-year emphasis on national security back into the spotlight Tuesday when he said he "wondered" if Democrats were more interested in safeguarding the rights of accused terrorists than protecting Americans.
The Ohio Republican's statement came after President Bush's Sept. 11 anniversary speech Monday evening drew the anger of Democrats who charged that it lapsed into partisanship. The highly charged rhetoric showed that the confluence of terrorism, national security and the war in Iraq is a key issue in a bitterly fought midterm election campaign in which polls and prognosticators say Democrats could make significant gains into the Republican majority.
Speaking of Democrats, Boehner told reporters, "I wonder if they're more interested in protecting the terrorists than protecting the American people.
"They certainly don't want to take the terrorists on to defeat them,'' he added in the context of answering questions about proposed legislation to legalize Bush administration plans for military tribunals to try some terrorism suspects under special rules. The administration's earlier plans for such tribunals were struck down by the Supreme Court, which suggested that Congress provide a remedy through legislation.
In recent days, congressional Democrats have been quiet on the trial issue, preferring to let the White House fight over proposed legislation with Republican critics of the tribunal plan such as Sen. John McCain of Arizona and Sen. John Warner of Virginia, who chairs the Armed Services Committee.
Republican leaders say they are close to an agreement on legislation, meaning they would have to deal with such issues as whether to allow tribunals to consider hearsay and coerced evidence and prevent defendants from having access to classified material being used in their cases.

"Now haster and Boehner are starting to move."
Their movement is long over due! I just wish that more Republicans would join the chorus.
I'm sure Maverick John McCain and his sidekick Lindsy Lohan Graham will come to the defense of the Democrats honor before the week is out.
GOP candidates need to keep driving home the point that demonrats will pay any price to win an office, even if it means being in office under an Islamic government.
Democrats have demonstrated that they see no difference between our Constitutional government and converting to Islam which they have more in common with and being in office in that position.
When the charge is true be sure and yell "partisanship" because they sure have no evidence that what he said isn't true.
Time will tell if he tucks his tail and the MSM/Dem tag team attack machine forces him to apologize.
Quote: "Yep. And the more they can get Harry and Nancy squealing in front of the mics, the better."
Can't repeat that enough. I used to get angry when I heard Nancy and Harry squeal, then I realized that they are at their worst when they are on the defensive.
Democrats are siding with the enemy, more and more, closer to election. Their election strategy threatens our troops and country's future. The enemy within at work in the Liberal Media and Democrat Party. Ask a liberal Democrat if they think about what is going to happen to our children
if we do not fight are enemy now?
Too bad this is not covered in school. . .before kids go off to college; a kind 'pre-warning'. But that is no doubt, too much to expect..
I hope many here will share as well.
For later.
"Bitter" pretty much describes every election that has taken place since the dems lost the House in 1994. The dems/libs/communists have been bitter, angry, spiteful, hateful, delusional, and unhinged ever since.
Boehner
Uh-huh-huh, huh-huh.
The RNC should run an ad against terror in it's 'own words'. . .
from Ahmadinejad/AP:
You must bow down to the greatness of the Iranian nation If you do not return to monotheism and worshipping god and refuse to accept justice then you will burn in the fire of the nations fury; I officially announce that Iran has joined the worlds nuclear countries.. . .
Think that is a 'spot' all it's own. . .
That message. . .should be out there. . .as well, put it as signage; in busses. . .trains et all.
Wonder ???
Well, it's a start.
When Republicans state the obvious-in unquivocal terms-it rallies the base.
Ala Santorum on MTP.
There are more than a few Democrats and their media mouthpieces who have been aiding and abetting the enemy during war.
I am waiting for one elected Republican to call their behavior treasonous.
Not some collegial, politically correct, wishy washy term, but, treasonous.
If we wanted limp wristed weaklings who love the enemy more than they do the country-we'd vote Democrat.
