NEW YORK (AP) -- Two of Lance Armstrong's former teammates said they used a performance-enhancing drug when they were getting ready for the 1999 Tour de France, according to a newspaper report.

Frankie Andreu, a 39-year-old former team captain, and another teammate who requested anonymity because he still works in cycling, told The New York Times they used EPO in preparation for the 1999 race, when Armstrong won the first of his seven titles in cycling's biggest race.

"There are two levels of guys," Andreu said in a story published on the newspaper's Web site Monday night. "You got the guys that cheat and guys that are just trying to survive."

Andreu said he took EPO for a few races and is admitting the use now because he's worried doping is having a negative effect on the sport.

Neither of the teammates ever had a positive test for performance-enhancing drugs. Both said they never saw Armstrong take any banned substances.

I'm not surprised to hear more doping stories emerge. I am surprised to hear Andreu mention he did use EPO on a few occasions. But not surprised to hear that Lance was not involved.

A bit of an old story, but amusing, nonetheless...
PARIS, France --

Lance Armstrong's record setting seventh Tour de France victory, along with his entire Tour de France legacy, may be tarnished by what could turn out to be one of the greatest sports scandals of all time. Armstrong is being quizzed by French police after three banned substances were found in his South France hotel room while on vacation after winning the 2005 Tour de France.

The three substances found were toothpaste, deodorant, and soap which have been banned by French authorities for over 75 years.

Armstrong's girlfriend, American rocker Sheryl Crowe, is quoted as saying "We use them every day in America, so we naturally thought they'd be ok throughout Europe."

Along with these three banned substances, French authorities also physically searched Armstrong and found several other interesting items that they had never seen before, including a backbone and a testicle.

I think all this steroid talk is just the tip of the iceberg. A lot more revelations are coming.

Well, I hope not. I think Frankie is right when he says some used them to cheat, others, and I think he was referring to his 'few times' use, just to survive. Lance has spent lots of time and money to clear his name. I'm sure the Frogs are loving it. And if they do push it, it's because they can, because what French rider has done half as well during the last 7 years? They will slide under the radar. Jealous frogs.

No problem!

I know!!! That's what went through my head, that's why I was so surprised. Well, 2 reasons. He seems like he'd be one to avoid that - and I tend to believe what he said, a few occasions to 'survive'. And also, because of his spot at OLN. I really enjoyed his reporting, whenever they get former riders to help with the commentary, it's always a plus (and he's kinda cute!).

I hope his 'coming clean' will be a plus for the network and the sport, and not a negative. Considering the reputed levels to which doping supposedly occurs, it could be turned into a positive. I hope so. The more who come clean and denounce it, the better it will be for the future of the sport, and the riders. Of course, I expect the Frenchies to have some fun with it. Since they haven't had any riders finish more than a stage or 2 near the top, they won't be scrutinized the same way, so I expect they will flame on.

What I don't understand about this is that Andreu said that the reason he is coming clean about it now is that he feels that doping is hurting his sport. Why does admitting use help cycling? It's just piling on IMO. It's also a little ironic that his wife, Betsy, was the person who tried to implicate Lance this summer by saying that she heard him testify to drug use in a private deposition.

"I think it's a pretty nasty attempt by The New York Times to link me to doping through somebody else's admission. You have to read way down in the article until Frankie says, 'I never saw Lance do anything.'

Welcome to the drive by media Lance.

And all this is old news, dating a few years back to a law suit that Lance Armstrong won.

These stories on cyclists doping don't have closure; I've never seen anything quite like it. Is this a slight drive by on Lance?
