Bawawawa Walters and Connie Chung got an 'associate' within weeks, IIRC.
Walters may have been only a co-anchor during her short stint. But neither Walters nor Chung was retained at the anchor desk for more than a couple of months.
Even 3rd place for Couric will probably be acceptibe for a while, provided her numbers are in the same range as Rather/Sheiffer's. If she drops too low, I'm betting that her contact has an 'out' clause for CBS.
After a while, CBS might try bringing in a co-anchor (of the male persuasion) and see if that boosts ratings.

Moonves' only hope is if the entertainment division keeps everything afloat. If it doesn't, Redstone will poleaxe Moonves in a New York minute. Witness how he very publicly executed Tom Cruise and Tom Freston...
