Notoriously independent-minded Rhode Island Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee confronts stiff opposition Tuesday in his bid for a second term, the latest race with a moderate targeted by his own party's hard-line critics.
While a total of nine states and Washington, D.C., were holding primary elections, Chafee's race is drawing the most attention as another test of the depth of anti-incumbent sentiment and the erosion of the political middle ground.

I stand by what I said. Chafee is NOT middle of the road. He is left of center. He is more liberal than almost 50% of the democrats in the senate.

Chaffee is one of the strongest reasons I give much less to the RNC than I would otherwise. Their judgement is a problem at times, as it sometimes does not support the conservative cause. (Nevertheless, for purposes of this post, I note to you that I understand the RNCs backing of Specter, for example.) However, you're entitled to your opinion of Chaffee, and you are entitled to have some consternation about the Rasmussen poll, but here is what I wrote on an earlier thread, and I will stand by it now, but with some glee given that RI might finally rid itself of Chaffee:

I'm surprised that RI Republicans may finally have had enough of Chaffee... I've been lobbying against him for a decade, it seems... I'd rather have some type of "R" in every seat of the Senate and can put up with RINOs like Snowe and Collins, but Chaffee is way out of the league of mere "RINO".
He not only votes against us, but he does real damage to the integrity of the Republican party.
I feel almost as strongly in that regard against McCain... but at least he has a true "conservative" streak on some issues. That does not seem to be true about Chaffee.
I excerpt manually and use an estimate of 50 words per para. I usually get pretty close then trim it down from there.
If Laffey and Graf win, I'll be very happy.
Chafee must go, I don't care what the opinion polls say about Laffey's chances.
The only republican representative or senator not to support and vote for Bush in 2004. The only republican, out of 55 in the U.S. senate, to vote against the confirmation of Samuel Alito to the supreme court. The only republican to be approached by Harry Reid about switching political parties.
He got a 12 rating from the ACU in 2005. Ben Nelson has about a 20 point higher lifetime rating than Chafee.
The man in a 100% RINO, the real deal, unlike the hated John McCain. Vote him out.
I've seen TV ads for Spencer, but none for McFarland. I would bet if you stopped people on the street, they wouldn't be able to come up with either name. Our newspaper has had virtually nothing on this race.
If he wins he has alot of work to do.
It's NOT anti-incumbent sentiment, it's anti-RINO sentiment. Chafee is not independent-minded, he is not a moderate or middle of the road. He is a leftist in every sense of the word except for some reason he has an R after his name. He is a disgrace to the Republican Party and he should be voted out!
One of the shows on Fox had the nerve to compare him to a "Republican" Joe Lieberman. Give me a break. Lieberman votes with the Dems 90% of the time...Chafee votes with the...wait a minute, he also votes with the Dems most of the time...he's a RAT!!!!
Didn't I also read on FR that it was Chafee that stopped the vote for Bolton the other day?
The primaries are the time to vote the RINOS out!
With Chafee being a lib, you'd think that the Republicans would PREFER a conservative to run against a Democrat, but then what am I saying!!! Most of the Republicans anymore are jokes. I"m so unhappy with my party.....but I'd vote for just about anyone over a liberal.
